CB250, bobber, cafe, tracker or big fkn fail?

This could either work really well, or someone else could wind up with a parted out CB250. My mechanical knowledge extends to, air goes in tyres and oil stops your engine from dying.

So this is going to be a steep learning curve I hope. I've always wanted to be handy mechanically, and picking up a running CB250 from a wrecker up here for cheap cheap seemed like a good way to go about it.

I know they're getting a bit of attention and it seems most people are trying to immitate it these days but i'm really liking the street tracker/sprung bobber stuff. Bratstyle, Wrench Monkees etc. BUT what this build become is going to be limited by me, so i may not get it quite right.

Bought it last night, and work will start today and tidying it up close to stock and getting it licensed before i start making some major changes.

Good to see you finally taking the plunge Kale. CB250's are a good basic starting point and we have all seen the multitude of diferent styles than can be created in here. Open you'r mind to the gods of speed and let them fill it with the power of mechanical learning. Good luck with it.

Much potential in this i see, mmmm.

If you choose the Cafe route, search cafe cowl or cafe seat on ebay, between the $100 - $200 mark you can get a fiberglass seat and tail piece, which would get the bodywork side of things 80% sorted for a nice little cafe racer look.
Otherwise Brat style is sweet :p But as everyone has said CB250s are a good basic start point, nice blank canvas to cut your teeth on. Those wheels should come up like chrome with some elbow grease and autosol
If its got tits or wheels, it going to give you trouble.

Just been back to the wreckers to return his ramp and tie downs i borrowed. He now has 2 CB400's, one 4 cylinder and one is 2. Bugger.

Also, he has an old BSA frame with a SWEEET looking tank on it. I mentioned that I may be interested in getting it for the CB, the blank stare i got makes me think he's all about original restos or isn't big into customizing.

That bike has a lot of potential so surf the pics on these forums! Awesome inpiration.
Did you ask the wrecker what he wanted for the BSA tank?

Glad to see you start a build at last. You'll always get good advice here so don't be afraid to ask what feel like silly questions, and ask for help when you think you need it...

Suggestions on front brake for these? Cable is snapped so would you just replace the cable or are there nicer/neater brake assemblies out there i can use on it? (silly question number 1). Kat69, no i didn't ask the price, I anticipate that I'll be a regular with Steve at the wreckers so don't want him to get the idea I'm a dreamer.

    Front.... Brake.... CABLE??????

That there bike has a hydraulic disc brake on the front, no brake cable there. If you have a broken cable on the front it will be your speedometer drive cable, and yes, replace it.

If you have a broken line running down to your brake caliper, then you have a broken brake hose or brake line, which again, yes, replace it, and you will need to then add new brake fluid and bleed all the air out of the brakes.

Might i suggest finding yourself a workshop manual for this bike, which will walk you through just about all of the work you will need to do to get this beast up and running again
If its got tits or wheels, it going to give you trouble.

Was the 400 twin a twin disc front end or a single? I'm keen to switch out the single disc front for my cb. Where is this wrecker located? Cheers, chris.

True, but if science had the funds religion has enjoyed for eons we might have better explanations by now, or at least hover shoes.
