Got a bit done today. Frame is pretty ugly though if you ask me.
Got a bit done today. Frame is pretty ugly though if you ask me.
Nah that frame looks nice to me, just needs to be cleaned up. Wash it, polish it and it will look 100 times better. From there you can start to figure out how you can hide wiring in it, which brackets are no longer needed and can come off etc.
I like the way there is no subframe up under the top rear section past the rear axle. Would make for a good Bobber![]()
You're answer to everything eh hahaha.
Actually, that frame is pretty much set up for a Bobber without very much work! Not saying that you should build a bobber, but I'm keeping that bike in mind for future projects.
I was going to ask this last time i posted up but it slipped my mind.
Where would i sit with frame mods on this. It's going to have to go over the pits and while i'm not wanting to do anything wild, some of the sub frame is going to be hacked to try and flatten the lines. If i get time this weekend I'll be taking the motor out and mulling it over, so I'll be able to show where i was thinking of making some changes.
I've also discovered that a previous owner has welded some nuts inside the rear sub frame to hang his panniers, so I'll be getting those out and patching the hole.
This project could go South very quickly over the next few days.
It always helps to plan ahead. If you wanted to do some frame mods that were 'touch and go' in terms of passing the pits, you could always get the bike running, pass it over the pits and THEN do the rebuild with frame mods![]()
"Always out-numbered, never out-gunned"
Would the guys at the pits notice your frame mods?
Don't know. I'll wait until i have a better idea and some pictures, then you guys can tell me.
It's the little things stopping your momentum that i hate the most. At the moment it's a few stubborn nuts holding foot pegs, exhaust and swing arm. Drowned with CRC and been hanging off spanners with not even a hint of movement.
Can i get some advice on my next option? Much appreciated.

hit them with a hammer yet?
impact wrench?
you could try heating them up first....might be a bit hard if you have rubber footpegs hanging around though....
last resort would be drilling them out...
good luck! i hate dealing with stuck bolts!
Have hit the socket wrench, moved the rubber pegs so that's not a worry.
Haven't got an impact wrench, might give that a crack.
Sort of... cant get stupid oil bolt off
If you can get a socket on it, you might want to try a bigr breaker bar on it rather than just the standard little rachet arm they give you. I brought a big long breaker bar for just that reason when I was pulling apart a front end in an old American Muscle Car, the extra leverage is awesome.
If you live any where near me (NOR) you're welcome to borrow mine

Single hex socket - thats six sides, not twelve )double hex, obviously)
Use a good single hex socket, should be able to get anough force on that to loosen it or twist the whole bolt in half! But dont do that... Just try a single hex socket on it with a decent size ratchet or breaker bar. If that wont do it have someone give fair taps with a hammer while your trying to turn it, if that fails your onto heating it up, or snap freezing it, whichever is easiest for you. And hit all the other bolts you can reach with some CRC or WD40 or the like as preemtive action, might save some hassle down the track or in a few days.
If its got tits or wheels, it going to give you trouble.
Still making some progress, getting close now to having the frame bare. Found some freeze spray which has been a big help also.
This is pretty much what I'll be aiming for. This bike ticks most boxes for me. Thoughts?
Thang's SR400 Tracker
Very cool, and very achievable.
IMHO you must have an idea of where you're going and what you're aiming for with your project before you start and stick to it, rather than just stumble along or you'll never get there, spend a ton of money and end up with a dog's breakfast.
Keep going mate, you're doing well do so far. Glad to hear you're getting past the stuck bolts problem. Little things like that can get you down, but you get past them. Trust me I know, just ask me about my rear axle...![]()
The SR's are a popular base for bobs, cafes and trackers. Is it the frame or geometry that makes em cool or the engine? Would it be worth making a universal frame based on the sr to take any engine?
I have this one to base it one..
I don't know if it's the SR for me, but i really like the round bar frames (i don't know what you'd call em). I think the pressed steel frame on this is going to give me the irrits no matter what, but this isn't going to be a masterpiece anyway.
I just really dig those smooth, round frames that flow and are linear.
What would be the go with making a frame though? Still need to have them engineered and tested?
