    CB360 rebuild

    Bought a '74 CB360 for a project club/classic/cafe rebuild.
Someone was racing it in the vintage classics in Victoria and had tried to tart her up a bit with a fibreglass seat and custom handlebar but it was in a shocking state all over. So here is a log so far of the work i have started on it to bring her back to life.

    1. Strip her bare of parts
    2. Sandblast frame and swingarm and tank

Heres a shot of the frame - i welded her up in a few places to reinforce tired welds.

A pic of here all cleaned and prep'd for priming.

Engine pics once stripped with paint stripper and scrubbed clean.

    Gday Bushy.
Got more pics to post later- as i have stripped the tank and will use that POR15 sealer this weekend to seal the insides.
Have actually primed the frame and swingy and am awaiting the paint to arrive.
    Cheers

AFAIK the 360 only came in twin form?
The CL version is a twin but more of a dirt scrambler i think?
Not sure about the CJ. The CB 350 came in both parallel and four versions.

Anyway, i treated the tank this weekend both inside and out.
The sealing took allday Saturday to weld up a couple of spots along the seams and also solder 4 pin holes.

The POR15 tank sealer sets rock hard in hours and looks to be the goods.
See below photo looking inside at the silver finish:

    IMG_0098.jpg

I brushed it back to bare metal on the outside and treated it then filled the dents (pre-existing) that i exposed and gave it a prime. However i will need to use filler again to level out the big dents. At least it is primed to stop the metal flash rusting.

This week will be brushing the engine and top coating the tank and frame.
    Cheers

    Quick update.
You cant see it but I have spent major hours taking things back to bare and degreasing the parts - ready to be brushed or polished or painted.

Took apart the wheels and rims and brushed the rust off the rims.
Then rust converted and primed and Galmet for a topcoat.

Degreased the engine again and seperated a lot of parts to be polished.

    Dirty degreaser

    Cleaner parts

    Rims converted.

Topcoat hasnt arrived yet - so hopefully next update will show the painted parts.

    Cheers

    Some updates on the cb360.

Managed to complete the wheels and hubs and lace the new spokes in.
Put some new tyres on as well.
My clipons arrived form the US so i thought i would fit her back together for a look at how it all fits together.

    No tank or seat:

    IMG_0105.jpg

With tank and seat. PPC silver satin finish.

    IMG_0106.jpg

    Different angles:

    IMG_0107.jpg

    IMG_0108.jpg

I have to complete all the small brackets holding the engine in and finish cleaning the head fins back to bare alloy.
Then i can start the electrics....

The tank came with the bike from the previous owner and he didnt know what it was and neither did i until now!

Cheers for that. It fits onto the tank rubbers at the front OK but I have run into some problems with the petcock outlet hitting the engine head. And it looks stupid if you tilt it up at the rear of the tank too much.
So i am probably going to ditch that tank and put the original on - since no-one seems to make an alloy tank to suit a cb360.

So back to scratch i will go and re-line the original tank and then paint it.

Was it much trouble to lace up the rims?

SPman: No - not too hard.
I looked up a heap of websites which explain how to go about it. Lots of small gradual adjustments. Took my time.
I got an axle and using my 2 vehicle jack stands made a makeshift truing stand with a bit of coat hanger wire.
Truing wasnt too hard - just take it slow and do the vertical alignment first and then the horizontal.
Once you have align it both ways - then tighten all evenly until you are happy with the tension.
This is the part i had no idea about as i still dont know how tight is tight enough? The thread on the spokes is onyl small - so be careful and dont go overboard.
True test will be when i actually take it for a spin!

you pretty much can't strip the threads on the spokes, at least not before the heads go completely out of round and you can't tighten them or loosen them anymore! oops

We used to adjust the spokes by sound......we reckoned if they all sounded the same when we hit them with tyre lever, they should be somewhere near...........that, of course, was with the wheels intact. I'd like to build up a set of wheels for the GT250 project...but that'll be next year, at the earliest.......
