    Cbr250rr extreme makeover

Here is a brief build thread for my CBR250RR. I originally bought the bike in 2004 with the idea of making a set of fairings to make it look like a RCV211V. I had completed the tail unit and was starting on the fairings when my daughter was born in 2005. Family life took hold and the poor little cbr sat in the corner of the garage for the next 4 years. In that time TYGA developed a RCV211V kit for the CBR. Earlier this year I decided to finish what I started, bought a TYGA kit and rebuilt the bike piece by piece.

Back in 2005, I had completely stripped the CBR and painted the frame, swingarm, wheels and engine. I had fitted michelin pilot race tyres (10mm wider than stock front & rear) and rebuilt the chassis, replaced the steering head bearings. Then it gathered dust until early this year.

After blowing the dust of it and cleaning out the carby's I got it running again and started ordering parts. I added led indicators, made my own carbon fibre chainguard, heelplates and exhaust bracket.

I fitted a new chain and sprocket, brake pads and serviced all the fluids (oil, coolant, brake fluid).

Then the fairings arrived and my wife and I spent about two weeks painting them, I had the decals custom made and they are clearcoated.

All the large nuts and bolt were nickle plated and the small ones were replaced with stainless steel. The seat is off a CBR600RR and was modded to fit.

When it was all put together the carby's were a bit rough, so I rebuit them, fitted new needles, jets and seals. I then spent hours tuning it. It now runs perfectly, with no flat spots and starts first time without any choke. I'll stop babbling now, enjoy the pics.

Very nice. Not a huge fan of the tyga front headlight area, but that's some excellent work there! That's a excellent looking paintjob as well...

G'day CBR fans, here are a few more detail pics. This is the fourth bike my wife and I have rebuilt and in our experience the devil is in the small details. Sure you can whack on a new set of fairings, but it will still look like an old bike if you don't overhaul EVERYTHING.

So when we rebuilt this bike we stripped it back until it was a pile of bits and then replaced whatever was worn out and repainted, replated or polished the good bits.

Personally I think the CBR heelguards and chainguard look a bit crap. The solution was to make my own carbon bits. I Shaped the heelguards and exhaust bracket from thin ally, then used that as a mould for the carbon. For the Chainguard, I shaped one out of wood, then made a fibreglass mould to make the carbon one.

Other small things that make a difference were painting/polishing all the switches and instruments and things like pulling the fuel tank cap apart and repainting it and replacing the bolts with stainless ones. The brake calipers were also overhauled and repainted. I used an electrodeless nickle bath for all the big bolts that were rusty and hard to replace with stainless.

As for the paint, we painted it in 2K. A trick I stole from a mate who used to build show cars was to give the fairings a double thick coat of clear over the base colour and decals. Then we sanded the clear back completely smooth with 2000 grit wet and dry (Took bloody days to do!) then we polished it with six different grades of polish from coarse to a final coat of auto glym wax (Took what felt like and eternity). The paint is now flawless. Thanks to my wife for doing alot of the paint finishing, by this time I had taken 2 months off work and spent every day on the CBR and I was getting sick of the sight of it.

I'll post some more pics and babbling soon when I can remember what else was done on it.

Did you get them powdercoated or regular auto paint? And if you painted them, have you noticed any chips/scratches (particularly on the rims) from riding?

I used and black epoxy primer for the frame and swing arm. The wheels were stripped back to bare metal and them primed with the black epoxy and painted with a base coat and a satin clear coat.
Has't done many K's since the build, but this paint was done 5 years ago and is still in perfect condition.

was it a straight bolt on kit or do you have to modify the bike ie- cut bits off

The tyga bodywork kits are designed to fit on the standard bike. The kit includes a full set of fairings (the side fairings that are included are the same as standard), it also came with the tinted screen, headlights/tail lights, a black fibreglass rear undertray and the single seat cowl as well as all new screws/bolts and some brackets to fit the new shape fairings. You can use the standard pillion seat, indicators, numberplate light and rear seat lock with the new tail. The front indicators are in the new headlights, but I changed these to the standard cbr parker lights and added led indicators to the fairings to keep it all legal. The kit is also designed to use the standard cbr250 riders seat, but I also changed that to a CBR600RR seat which looks a bit better and slightly raises the seat height.

The only advice I could offer for anyone fitting a tyga kit is to trial fit the fairings a few times before painting because it takes a bit of practice to fit them.
