    Custom Bobber Build

I've been umm'ing and arr'ing whether to put up this post for one reason or another... primarily because I don't get allot of spare time these days.... Anyway, here's some photo's of my custom bobber which is currently being built.

The motor arrived from the US last week, a 93" S&S Shovelhead and it was a real treat seeing it for the first time! The gearbox should arrive within the next week or so... running with a Baker 6 speed kicker.

I'll post some more photo's soon when the engine & gearbox are sitting in the frame.

Looks awesome!! I'm very jealous as you've got it all going on and the right way: Rigid frame, S&S Shovelhead, Baker trans with Kicker, springer front end. What more could you want...

Which tranny did you get from Baker, the 6-into-4?

No, not at all, each to their own as they say. It was just out of curiosity, wondering if there was a particular advantage.

Did you make the frame yourself?

It's just the way HD made them back then. They did go to a unit construction design with the Sportster, and the current Twin Cam Harleys are a semi-unit construction with the gearbox bolting directly to the back of the engine to form a single unit.

Keeping them separate gives you advantages in changing engine and gearbox types and primary drives over time rather than locking you into what the factory gives you.

Thanks Sheridan. The tranny chosen was their 6 Speed Frankentranny (see pic)....love the name! For your interest... the frame was made to spec by Daytec in California, 32 deg rake with 2" stretch in the backbone... welds are sweet. Rear fender, brake setup, oil tank, forward controls and internal throttle are all from Exile Cycles (Russell Mitchell). Going to run with an Evil Engineering "Kickstein" 2" open primary (see pic)... These have a 7" clutch and I'll fit the matte black and machined billet pressure plate. Will see how it looks with and without the polished clutch shroud.

Can't wait to see the engine & tranny in the frame.

Thanks mcdegoh. I wish I could say I'm doing the building, but I'm not. It's being built for me. I can help you with some of the basics and the paintwork (I paint & build pushbikes as a hobby) but that's about the limit. I recently fitted a "Blue Collar Bobbers" kit to a mates V-Star 650 and gave it a paint job... it came up nice. PM me if you like.

Man the kickstein open primary is a thing of beauty!! is it just me or do the pullies have there teeth angled at about 10 degrees? Does this prevent the belt from tracking off the pully at all or does it transmit the power better??
Yes the welds are as good as I have seen and the sprotor setup will make for a very clean rear end.
    Top stuff!!!!

Yes, that's right the pulleys have angled teeth and they say this gives:

    - Over 35 percent higher tensile belt strength
    - Self centering belt gives optimum efficiency
    - 50 percent less belt drive associated vibration
    - 50 percent lower belt drive associated noise
    - Superior tooth engagement reducing tooth slippage and tear out

Have a look at their website, they make some pretty cool stuff. Evil Engineering Open Belt Drives

Nice! Awesome project, looking forward to updates.
How do you go about registering a bike like this? ICV?

Thanks Lorenz. Yes, apply to the DOT to get "permission" to build it under the ICV regs. The bike has to get checked by an DOT approved engineer who will give it the tick and issue Vin# Frame# etc then the compliance plate will get issued and riveted to the frame. Once all that's done it goes over the pits to get licensed.
