Personally I wouldn't paint the mirrors on a 748/916 the same colour as the black they come in doesn't interrupt the nice line coming up from those pinched headlights.

^^^it means you dont have to paint them again when you wipe them off on car mirrors while high speed splitting and then get run over. dont ask me how i know this but the mirrors are very strong.

Bikes aside...

I think carbon *looks* gay personally.

Yes, functional carbon = win, but i actually prefer the LOOK of paint.

Mirrors look good in yellow jim. But yeah, don't see anything wrong with black, either.

Yeah, the Torx part, I'm not comfortable doing the nuts up if I can't hold them.

From (hazy Heinekin induced) memory, only 2 of the cush drive nuts were stripped, you may find that the rest are okay.

Just checked the "spares" cupboard... lots of stock parts and a Termi sticker, but no cush drives I'm sorry. There are some brake lines off a Gixxer 750 (girls bike) but I doubt they'll be much help

it's the tiny torx head in the middle, on 2 of your cush drives it's cracked.

As far as I see it Jim, you can get 2 cush drive rubbers from Damo, or e-bay these ones (I take no responsibility for quality of e-bay parts and personally I would buy the OEM ones)

What do I do with this bike? I've chased a rabbit down a hole and I just keep on getting little surprises.
It's driving me to the "drink me" option.
Do I pull it back to the frame and start again, replacing everything that needs to be replaced over the space of a few years, or do I keep chasing the problems as they appear?
Everything on this bike has been an effort, I'm wondering should I just put in the effort and time to do everything perfectly and the way it should be done, to my standards?

Is it still the cush drives? I was going to say "go back to the frame and start again" but then I re-read this thread and you've already done a heap of work! The end can't be too far off now!

I would probably check the condition of whatever you haven't touched so far, like the inside of the tank (rust!), pump/filter/regulator, fuel hoses (if they're old, replace them), wheel/headstem/swingarm bearings and stuff like that which is "getting old" type stuff and could could let you down.

Does a 2001 748R have a 1.6 ECU? If so why are you using a power commander and not programming the EPROM in the ECU?

for thbe love of god keep riding it.

If you take it off the road it will never happen, especially with the sprog on the way. Do bits and pieces as they pop up, not having the bike on the road would make desmo sad
