    FZR400 3TJ slooow build

Well this is my ' get banned and keep sane ' project . First things first, she's a last generation FZR400 (but not the SP ), that i picked up cheap enough, but not running. I always loved these when they came out, and i was riding a AR50 dreaming of bigger things ! Most parts seem to be there, and in a fairly average condition. Motor doesn't fire and everything seems to point to the soft from factory inlet valves. Plan's are to clean up, paint anything that will look better painted and replace what needs replacing really, and i really want to fit a YZF600 thundercat engine, and maybe a R6 shock, oh yeah and better adjustable forks and and well you get the picture. Got any parts ? got any ideas ? got any input ? let me know

Great place to start..... Yeh, pity about the inlet valves on this generation of Fizzer. We used to sponsor a couple of fella's on FZR 600's that proddy raced and, while they both did it, you could set one up at .25mm clearance on the inlet valves and it would have 0 ( or there abouts )after 5 races. This was a lot better on the 'Cat which was ( and still is ) a great little bike all round. Got plenty of 7.48mm shims if you want to to do your clearances and need to exchange some.

Seen these with the fzr600 and cbr918 motor. You have to think about the fireblade swap I posted a thread on it a few months ago, will find it tommorow.

Thanks Satan1, yeah heard rumours myself. I read of a guy in the UK that put a bored out CBR600 ( 720 ) into one so head is spinning with ideas. Fzr1000ru could be made to fit also but the weight would start to be a problem.

If you're going to chop it around that much, it'd be easier to get an R6, wouldn't it?

Why does someone always mention this sort of crap everytime someone wants to fuck around with their bike??

Maybe he will get a bit of enjoyment by the whole process? If all anyone ever did was just buy whatevers available, it'd be a pretty boring community. I love seeing projects like this take shape.

I like the sound of having a 1:1 hp/weight ratio with 150 neddies

And it's worth doing because you can.

Edit: sorry 2wheels didn't realize the pb link was outdated. But the march 09 issue should be the one

I agree with Wigarus - good to see more people going out there and doing stuff out of the ordinary. Would be pretty boring if everyone just bought stock machines...I for one would like to see how awesome this will turn out...

(1:1 power to weight sounds mighty fun )

Whilst I realise the challenges and enjoyment involved (I knew someone who dropped an FZR600 motor in an FZR400 in '95 - well - not dropped - there was rather more work involved in it than that), FZR400's aren't exactly thick on the ground around here. Seems a shame to "extensively modify" what is, IMO a superb little sports bike in it's own right.
But, then, it's his bike and he can do what he wants with it.
Best of luck - I will watch with interest.......

Yeah you're all right really. I want to update a modern classic by fitting a engine i won't get bored with in the first couple of miles, but not change anything that i couldn't put back to standard ( as they are rare ). Also for the road i want to keep the standard old style bodywork, but with SP colours ( i just love the look of these babies ), but use my old R1 2003 track body work for trackdays. Also i've never had the balls to strip a bike ( that i want to use again ) to a frame and pretty much, single components. So this is where we are today, stripped, de-greased and ready for paint prep ( unorignal but looks right, satin black ). Ausinana's popped round and we sorted a few things out, keep standard exhaust but shortened ( just looks right ), GSXR forks ( K5 onwards would be nice ), R1 calipers and so on, thanks G. Anyway next step will be paint, but not until this rain keeps on fallin. Thanks for the interest guys and keep any ideas coming, good or bad...ish

Sorry forgot too mention the last 2 pics. First one is a project i did along time ago in the UK, NC30 with full race system ( $ 1400 and cut and shut ), HRC airbox mods, GSXR 750 race tail with ZX6R light frenched in, jet work, quick action throttle, Streetfighter style bits and bits, and so much more that i forget really, apart from upto around 160kph it was a 600 beating missle, lol. Second pic is just me along time ago on a modded ( lights, paint, brakes, jets , filter, exhaust etc )showing off with a rolling stoppie, got me on the TV though, them were the days !!!

Here is my thread if you want some ideas
    Project FZR400/YZF600R Hybrid

    1988 FZR400 3EN frame
1999 built to the hilt thundercat engine (YZF600R)
    33mm keihin flat slides FCR
fabed up a subframe out of Aluminum tubing
using a 2007R6S model front end

a Honda rear wheel (Machined it up a lot)

ultra lightweight hindle exhaust with a can I had fabricted here.

    Fox twin clicker rear shock

I did a lot of one off work for mine but you can do a lot with what you have and still be able to put her back to stock form.

The R6 front end just need the old stem pressed out and replaced with the original FZR stem not all that hard. might ned to make a sleeve around the old stem which I beleive it is smaller in diamater.

Feel free to hit me up with Questions. I took nearly 2 years to build mine.
