I know I'm new to these forums, however just wanted to post what I've been doing for the past 3 months off and on.
After a mate of mine ran his GPX250 into a tree on his L's, and had the bike sitting at my house while things got sorted out, I decided to ask him if I could take it off his hands as a small project, as the body was slightly out of shape, wasn't kicking over, and a few other minor issues. He said his fine with that and told me I could have it for free, coudln't complain really as he just wanted it off his hands, not to mention his Wife wasn't a supporting factor anymore, lol.
When it arrived at my house it looked a little unwell, Fairings cracked, front wheel wasn't aligned to the bars, all the fun kind of stuff, not to mention the footpegs were ripped off. As this was my first project it was a experiance and a half.
I started work and stripped the bike down to its bair bones, quickly noticing that the headlight snapped the housing metal section that holds the Light, and Mirrors inplace, along with holding the fairing to the bike, seems it was welded up once before. Thought that re-wielding it was a futile attempt went out and got a 2nd hand one for 20$, needed some work, bending and such as it was on another GPX that crashed as well.
The rear of the bike was completly out of shape, while I was fiddling with all of that, I started looking around for parts for the bike, Front Fairing, Rear Fairings, Foot pegs, and while I was doing all that got quotes for Front and Rear sprokets just so I knew what I was up for.
Got the rear section sorted out, new Fairing and Lights, all setting me back only 130$ for both.
I used the old fairing for practice on Plastic Wielding, as I've never done it before as I needed to fix up the front wheel guard and decided to try that before paying 120$ for a new one what I thought was overpriced.
I quickly started work on repairing the engine, most might think why would I start repairing the Fairings and body work without even looking at the engine first, but thought might as well make it look alright, then just sell it as engine died, well... was my justification of the situation, so worked in my head.
After getting the bike started, cleaning out everything, dropping the oil out, new filters and anything else that didn't look to healthy was replaced, only settling me back around 180$ for everything, the bike turned over, much to my suprise, was a good day when that happened I can tell you.
After everything finally coming into place, I ordered the footpegs, and new Fairings, all of what was a hassle to find in a similar paint scheme, scored a bike rack for 10$ at one place due to it was out of shape and needed work done, grabbed it out of the bin and asked if i could take it, didn't like the fact they told me I had to pay 10$ but coudln't complain, they had to make some money, lol.
Finished Product:
Final Price: $600est spent to restore her.
I recently found a buyer for her, and he took it off my hands for $1,700 after I got it checked out at a shop to make sure everything is in working order.
Gave my mate $900 and kept $800 for myself to cover the parts I used and time spent, not to mention he got the bike for $750 anyways, thought it didn't worry me about the cash, was more for the experiance, and afterall it was his bike that he gave me for free as a small side project, so didn't want to sell the bike and not give him something
