    GPX250 1988 Project Bike

I know I'm new to these forums, however just wanted to post what I've been doing for the past 3 months off and on.

After a mate of mine ran his GPX250 into a tree on his L's, and had the bike sitting at my house while things got sorted out, I decided to ask him if I could take it off his hands as a small project, as the body was slightly out of shape, wasn't kicking over, and a few other minor issues. He said his fine with that and told me I could have it for free, coudln't complain really as he just wanted it off his hands, not to mention his Wife wasn't a supporting factor anymore, lol.

When it arrived at my house it looked a little unwell, Fairings cracked, front wheel wasn't aligned to the bars, all the fun kind of stuff, not to mention the footpegs were ripped off. As this was my first project it was a experiance and a half.

I started work and stripped the bike down to its bair bones, quickly noticing that the headlight snapped the housing metal section that holds the Light, and Mirrors inplace, along with holding the fairing to the bike, seems it was welded up once before. Thought that re-wielding it was a futile attempt went out and got a 2nd hand one for 20$, needed some work, bending and such as it was on another GPX that crashed as well.

The rear of the bike was completly out of shape, while I was fiddling with all of that, I started looking around for parts for the bike, Front Fairing, Rear Fairings, Foot pegs, and while I was doing all that got quotes for Front and Rear sprokets just so I knew what I was up for.

Got the rear section sorted out, new Fairing and Lights, all setting me back only 130$ for both.

I used the old fairing for practice on Plastic Wielding, as I've never done it before as I needed to fix up the front wheel guard and decided to try that before paying 120$ for a new one what I thought was overpriced.

I quickly started work on repairing the engine, most might think why would I start repairing the Fairings and body work without even looking at the engine first, but thought might as well make it look alright, then just sell it as engine died, well... was my justification of the situation, so worked in my head.

After getting the bike started, cleaning out everything, dropping the oil out, new filters and anything else that didn't look to healthy was replaced, only settling me back around 180$ for everything, the bike turned over, much to my suprise, was a good day when that happened I can tell you.

After everything finally coming into place, I ordered the footpegs, and new Fairings, all of what was a hassle to find in a similar paint scheme, scored a bike rack for 10$ at one place due to it was out of shape and needed work done, grabbed it out of the bin and asked if i could take it, didn't like the fact they told me I had to pay 10$ but coudln't complain, they had to make some money, lol.

    Finished Product:
Final Price: $600est spent to restore her.

I recently found a buyer for her, and he took it off my hands for $1,700 after I got it checked out at a shop to make sure everything is in working order.

Gave my mate $900 and kept $800 for myself to cover the parts I used and time spent, not to mention he got the bike for $750 anyways, thought it didn't worry me about the cash, was more for the experiance, and afterall it was his bike that he gave me for free as a small side project, so didn't want to sell the bike and not give him something

Well done mate, good karma giving your mate $900, I would have given him $500 at the most, also good karma making sure it was certified safe before you sold it.

I tested my ability out on the rear fairing to see if I could do it. Didn't want to pay the guy money to do it.

The front wheel gaurd itself was cracked, nothing was missing, just a few minor brakes in the fairings.

I did it with a Soldering Iron, some small Metal Fillers, and went from there, slowing working it from the back of the Gaurd (Not the visible area), after that I just sanded it back, repainted and worked out alright, There is a few youtube video's I found that helped me out on it.

EDIT: I foudn the link I used when I was reading up on it.

I have a old Belly Pan that has been repaired (Got it when I got the front Fairing as it came with it), I'll upload photo's now, but it just needs to be sanded back and repainted as there is slight scratches on it if you want to take that, isn't doing me any good and might as well give it to someone that might use it.

LOL, yeah, its quite strong once done correctly, the only thing you have to watch out for is when you're sanding it back to re-paint, that you don't crack it again. Besides that, getting a paint to match the rest of the bike is easy, as its black from what I've seen in the other thread you posted.

the one i got only has a minor crack so ill just repair mine. The paint work on it is fine. I have to re weld the tabs that connect the belly to the bottom. U reckon i could weld them on with the soldering trick on should i get it professionally done?

The small lugs at the bottom of the front (top half) Fairing that come down to throw the nuts into? If that's the case, I did it, however just make sure you align everything up correctly, as I dind't do a good job and had to re-do it all, came out strong and as i did it behind the front fairing, its not visible. Besides that, its a easy job to do in my books, just takes time and effort.

Yer theres 4 tabs that joins the belly to the bottom. Ill fab up some tabs and weld em on. Saves me a couple of bucks XD
Hey do u no if the exhaust tips come off? I need to get one welded since it has a few holes in it but i dont want to take the whole lot off. It looks as if u undo a hose clamp and it slips off but mine either has 20 years of corrosion or its welded.

I saw a GPX in that colour scheme this arvo, I reckon they look bloody fantastic if in good nick, and polished etc
They look much smaller and more agile than my Hyo, I had the choice of getting a green/black one at the time, but it was nearly a grand more than my Hyo (5000$ for a old style GPX wtf!).
