    GPZ600R streetfighter project.

picked up this lic running but very poor condition gpz600r for a song last week and liked it straight away on the ride home even tho its not in good nick.
    The bad
1 fairings completly cracked snapped broken in multiple places.
2 has been dropped on left so foot peg hanger a homejob as is gear change.
3 sometimes needs assistance to pop gear lever up
4 essentially no gauges except tacho going strong.
5 neautral light hardwired as unit broken so always lit green.
6 indicator contacts appear gone on left of switch.
7 falcores dog loving the new found smell of butt/nuts chewed the crap out of the seat.
8handlegrips appear to be from bmx . . I kinda like em but they gotta go.
9fork seals are gone and front end seems spongey with a tendancy to wander.
10 battery not holding the greatest.
With all that it was still a good ride and very familiar to the little zzr i started on so easy step up in bike size. I intend to do a minimum cosmetic fighter makeover mostly to get rid of the dicky 80s fairings and give the bike a more modern look whilst addressing safety issues like forks and braking if i can end up with a neat fast and safe bike like the one pictured ill be pretty happy.

so fairings are off as are lights and gauges you end up with a batting cage bolted to the front of your bike so thats next to come off.
Once its gone i can tape the mx light into place and get a look at where its going and if thinngs are gonna reach and fit.
Also have to think of mirror mounts as the old ones attached to the fairing, same with indicators tho i think ill go with led integrated and kill two mounting birds with one stone.

    light fairing

going with this light and fairing surround im trying to only use parts from the shed as much as poss so this one is off my road trail e marked and on hand.
I kinda like it and it will give the bike a small fairing at the front to hide some wires and mounts.

My first big bike was a GPz600.

    Lasted four weeks.
You see poor old Aurthur desperately needed to get in to the petrol station and turned across directly in front of me.

Bike went down and hit the wheel of his car.

I went down in a pair of shorts and a t shirt.

Spent five days in hospital where i ran out of skin sliding down the road.

Got a new bike and $20k for that accident.

Not bad for a squid to the yacht club...

    ATGATT be fucked.

I had a brand new GPz600 as one of my first bikes...

And strangely that number plate seems to ring a bell...

Will check some old pics I have of the bike when my stuff gets across from QLD, just not sure whether the number plate is in any photos...

Do you ever pass through the rockingham/port kennedy area? And if so, would you like a workshop manual for the old girl, might help sort out that neutral light, and all the other little wiring and service bits and bobs your going to run into with it. Manual just sitting here going spare anyhow.
If its got tits or wheels, it going to give you trouble.

cheers mate pm sent. welll got the batting cage style fairing support off, and removed the old gauges very carefully marking the wires, im going with a digi instrument set nmbrpl8 put me onto so cheers for that.
dtarted taking the mx mounts of the enduro and checked the wiring for the light it doesnt look like it has high beam guess road trail didnt need it in 86.
also just sourced one of those temp tank tops and preped the overflo for paint and remount next to tank that should give me a basic shape to work with to start thinking colour and mirror placement

1986, does your mx headlight take a globe or is it sealed beam? If its sealed you might be able to get a housing to convert it to globe, and if it is already globe then you might be able to just drop in a high/low beam globe and wire accordingly.
If its got tits or wheels, it going to give you trouble.

ive been running some ideas like that, i want to use the unit and would prefer to be legal, was also toying with the idea if small`spotlights to act as high beam. will try and take one apart tmrw to check for globe changeability.
but its the boys birthday so were taking his new bmx out riding.
i just stole his trick pegs as pillion for the xj750 at least that might hold off the broken neck!

So the mx light and fairing im using came from a ts 250 enduro taking up a corner of the garage whilst i decide to repair or sell it i liked the unit but it had its own special ittle mount for the fairing built into the tubes so i stripped the damm things off the ts then took the top tree off the gpz only to discover that despite being a mil difference they wouldnt slide on.
So dremelled the little bit required and put the rubber vibration reducers on using liberal amounts of lube i lined them up and pushed the whole thing on in one go :-)
both sides slid down no prob and the height and width has worked really well.
So fitted the weak as piss but adr marked light into its little bracket tighten everything up got it wired and amazingly it came right on.
It looks like the fairing will very neatly cover the front space and have a bit of a katana like face.

Looks like there might be room to run them the other side of the head stem when he has them off next. Will need that length when he goes some mean clip ons :p cheap as chips on that danmoto site too.

cables were a little tight but i went back and rationalised there flow now everything is neat hidden and under the fairing cover there is so much cable spare i will have to shorten the loom when i do the final wire and shrinky.

These bars are a touch tight im tall and pretty broad so it feels like thier under and behind my shoulders almost, a few degrees out swung more would be much better but how?
1 take the bars and mounts to a ali fab and have them remade as a billet piece lighter stronger with mirror ports and perhaps a bit of length. Expensive but ideal i think.
2 look for bar in serts with an angle, have done doesnt seem to be much around.
3 take these straight bars out heat and pipe bend and hope they dont snap on me one day. Not ideal.
4 buy standard handle bars of this diameter cut out the sections i want and fit? Its on the cards as a maybe.
Any other suggestions or ideas guys?

*Option 5: fit a different top triple tree, might break your rule of using things you have around, but get one from a wrecker or the like, with normal bar mounts
*Option 6: cut/grind those bars off the top there so that the mounting plates are smooth and flush with the rest of the triple tree. Drill through the top triple to mount a set of normal motorcross bar risers like so with either one big-un or two smaller bolts holding each riser on. Then fit bars of your choice.

*Option 7: clip ons There are some adjustable clipons, pretty cheap too on that same danmoto site, that look like this

Could you get them arranged in such an adjustment that they would look and feel good? Otherwise will regular non raised up clipons work with the planned ergos?

Final question, man thats some effort to go to polishing that headlight surround, is there a reason you dont just paint it? I know its plastic but on a road bike surely the paint will hold up long enough if you use the right paint? Looking cool tho, cant wait to see some of the more drastic mods
If its got tits or wheels, it going to give you trouble.
