GS1000ST project

I've just got the front cowling and rear seat cowl back from Motorcycle Panel and Paint and put them on.
When I bought the bike it seemed to be in good nick, with an engine rebuild, new carbs and various new stuff like chain, sprockets etc. A few days after buying it, it started running really badly and I've only just got it running properly. I've replaced the fuel tap with a Pingel unit to replace the funny vacuum-fed one that was standard, and have cleaned the carbs as best I could without taking them off and rebuilding them completely (which was the next step if necessary, but they are basically new so I didn't think this was really necessary). I've put in a new battery, regulator rectifier, ignition leads and starter motor (which I think I probably fried myself while trying to get the rest of it sorted out).
All it came with was a bashed up front cowl and no brackets. Sorting this out has taken an age. I got a new front cowl sent from the US and I got the decals done separately (6 weeks it took) from a guy in Canada called BD designs. Amazing job. The brackets were impossible to source, so I had to buy a whole GS1000SN cockpit on ebay and keep the brackets, selling the rest of the cockpit on (didn't lose any money).
Front cowl not easy to put on; front wheel and forks off job; required ultimately taking apart the speedo and taking the front headlight off so that everything could be got at too.
Nice result in the end I think. The front cowl isn't sitting completely straight, and one of the brackets might need a bit of a bend, but I haven't got the energy at the mo, and you can't tell from the side. It needs a new seat; not sure where this one comes from - I've got a proper original copy on order from ebay.
Brakes need sorting - I gave them a good general clean and rattle around when I took the front wheel off - they seem to work much better today.

Nice one pearcey. You might find that your seat is off a GS1000SN or an E from around 79. Cheers

6 weeks isnt to bad, mine got lost in the post for just over 3 months.
On thegsresources website Brian from BD got people from Australia to measure there STs and he made them from there.

Brian was great to deal with - he spoke to me on a regular basis the whole time. Might have been a bit longer than 6 weeks thinking about it - he was getting some sort of new machine in.

An 1100 Katana alloy swingarm fits straight in one of those...

So I've heard and therefore gives you a wider, tastier tyre choice. Goes a bit beyond Mechano-type bike fixing tho. I've always thought of it as a project for next winter maybe...

Hey guys. My own GS1000SN is likely to get some mods over the next year or so. I'll post up progress and pitfalls for others amusement.
Pearcey if it makes you feel any better about waiting for parts I recently waited 6 weeks for a new bikini fairing, and when delivered it was damaged in about 6 places. To the credit of the supplier he has sent me another which is now on its way.
I've found that the most important skill with these projects is patience...... :-) cheers

If anyone's interested...
Did the Perth Cafe Racers' Dyno Run today. Max 76bhp at the back wheel, which I'm pretty happy with; pretty hot day too. Reading the original reviews when the bike came out they were getting 72bhp then; mines not that far off stock.

Runs lean at lower revs, and rich at higher revs. Clutch is slipping at higher revs too; hadn't really noticed, but I don't tend to take it to 8000 anyway. Probably need to spend some time in the garage either way...
