    Herbie's 2009 R1

Alright, I have had my 2009 R1 for a few months now and feel it is time to start with the mods. I have found myself some inspiration from Hornet's thread, which I have been scouring over for the last few days, not to mention the R1SP that was on display at the PSB stand in the bike show this weekend.

This will probably be a fairly slow project as I have nowhere near the knowledge and know-how that Im sure others undertaking similar projects have had. As such I am going to learn my crafts along the way and make sure things are done properly.

At this moment in time, the bike looks like this (sorry about the poor photos, will take a few in my garage over the next week or so and post up shortly.

    0186-L.jpg

I have a few things in mind which will keep me busy for the next couple of months, so as I upgrade things I will post up info and photos along the way.

    Suggestions/advice most welcome

    Cheers,

    Herbie

My suggestion would be to decide exactly the look/style you want to acheive and then plan out your build very carefully.

It can be very costly to buy and fit parts that end up not fitting your vision. Photoshoping parts/colours is a good way to get an idea of how things will look when finished.

Thanks for the advice, I saw your bikes at the show and was thoroughly impressed with the quality of them. Absolute works of art

As far as look/style of my bike, I have a fairly clear vision of what I want the bike to end up like and have done some research into parts needed to get there and am in the process of listing the parts I need/costs etc. One thing that I'm sure will help me out is that I am a stickler for details, I won't invest money until I am sure it is what I want and I am sure the process of modifying this bike will be no different The photoshop idea is a great one, although may set me back a bit longer as I am a hack at Photoshop too haha

Needless to say, some of the stuff will be harder for me to fit than others, so Im sure I will have to call on some of the PSB how-to guides/youtube videos/PSB member advice etc. to learn exactly what I need to do in certain situations.

Also, for the record this bike is very much standard at present time, so I have a clean canvas to work off!

    Cheers.

Just be aware that finishes vary heavily between manufacturers/vendors, so not only do you need to find the parts ... but find them in the right finishes.

I look forward to seeing what you create.

Yeah I did notice the differences in a lot of the parts Hornet purchased/tried.

Being as Im going for the gold theme I think his thread is going to help me a lot. I really want to try to avoid a "7 different shades/finishes of gold" type look if I can...

haha...it is on the cards. Planning on getting them done early next year

and you should be a sales rep for Roo Exhausts - first trying to put them on a Duke, now an R1....

    You should also be shot.

Looking forward to see what you do :-)

i'm at the same stage working out what i want to do with mine. I would definitely go with some slip-ons and Y-pipe or if you can extended the budget full system (not that the gain is much i think 6-7hp)

for mine i'm looking at some simple mods 1st; HID, flush front indicators and possible switch the park lights to also indicators, and some smaller rear indicators

    Exhaust problem solved.

As for gold. I did my first build in gold. Its a prick of a colour to match. There are a few ways to go about it, but it comes down to a few things that are difficult to control such as the material/quality and process.

yeah i noticed the same thing, you dont get much for an investment in a full system and remapping, with the 09-10 r1's. from what ive seen of the full graves curves they are pretty much a mirror of the stock curves including the wonks with very minor gains <5%. without going down the road of rebuilding the motor from the ground up with YEC and GRAVES bits power is hard to come by.

imho an R1 build should use GYTR parts wherever possible, GRAVES is also ok but its your bike

Yeah i was leaning towards the Akrapovic carbon pipes, they look fantastic

Also been doing a lot of research on the net for a little while now. Got an idea of what parts I want to use. Just planning what order I am going to do it all in.

I plan to do it over the next year and have it finished for X-Mas 2012. (someone told me to set a deadline and triple it, but I'll see how I go )

Bah! Graves have been working with Yamaha at the SBK level for a very long time now. It's near enough to HRC/GYTR/TRD/VTECYO as you need.

apart from exhausts and cams i dont think they offer much themselves for the new r1's. they are more a distributor for YEC works bits than a manufacturer and developer.

edit: after taking a closer look at their web i have to retract that about developer, they do have a lot of suspension stuff, a lot of support info for their works programs and a very expensive looking blueprinted head.

I've also got a black 09 R1 and they do, that's what I have on mine. I'd also suggest getting rid of as much of the unpainted stuff especially the rear sets. The raw aluminium look looks ok on the blue/white & red/white models but looks crap on the black one. Whether you replace them or get them powdercoated black. I got mine powdercoated along with other stuff to make the bike more black. Also replaced the front & rear brake resovoirs with Rizoma black aluminium ones & black pazzo levers. Then put on flush mounted indicators to make the front more sleek. Rear seat cowl & other bits and pices too. I just ordered a zero gravity windshield which can't come soon enough.

Good luck with the modding, it's fun.

Thanks - heaps of great info there. And yes, rearsets are one of the first things I'm going to change, along with brake reservoirs etc too.

Plenty of other things in mind that I will keep close to my chest at the moment. Keep the suspense ...

i like GYTR cos it allows the bikes to be modified but with genuine yamaha bits. off the production line, they are base model bikes priced to sell. fully loaded with all GYTR bits is the LTD model.

godamnit herbie and your fucking mod r1 thread.. i just spent the last 2 hours filling a shopping cart at SBKTS. that website is way too easy to navigate you shouldnt go there
