    Looking For Army Motorbikes

Although this topic may seem a little strange to post up in Members Projects, I felt that it would be an appropriate place as it is indeed a project that I am undertaking.

I'm searching for ex army motorbikes that members may have or know of so that I can photograph and study. I am particularly looking for bikes in original condition from the 1960's, 70's and 80's.

I'm currently researching motorbikes used by the SASR - Special Air Service Regiment from the 1960-90 period inclusive. During the early years of the patrol Land Rovers, the SASR carried and used a variety of 'personal bikes'. In other words, bikes privately owned by SASR soldiers. In later years the SASR used army acquired bikes such as the Suzuki DR 250 and 350. I am also chasing 'in service' photographs of any of these bikes.

If any members can help me out with my research, please PM me or I can be contacted here - stuartkm@iinet.net.au

I have attached a thumbnail of a bike type that I would like identified. Any thoughts?

Whilst on the subject, I'm personally looking to purchase a Yamaha DT250 (complete or in parts) in unrestored condition as this is one type of bike the SASR used during the 70's.

    All the best

    Stuart

It might be worthwhile for you to contact Major Bruce Hughes, Project Director of Special Training Facilities here in WA.
Also - a visit to the new museum at Campbell Barracks - they have a few bikes on display there.

Chuck Norris is 1/8th Cherokee. This has nothing to do with ancestry, the man ate a fucking Indian.

    Thanks Sprint.

I was down at the museum two weeks ago and had a good look around. Very impressive.

I have gathered some info from ex SASR guys but photos seem to be hard to come by. It would seem that bikes were not as photogenic as the four wheel variety.

Looks like I crack a mention on the website.

Can't help with pics though, I don't recall that many of the bikes anyway, as you say the LRPV's were more sexy (at least for Series 2 Rovers).
