Nice bike Mockery, single sided swingarm looks great and eight spoke rear looks better than later five spokers on the 750's and 800's
Don't mod it too much as you know YOU NEVER GET YOUR MONEY BACK, ride it, enjoy it, upgrade it later...

I like ugly bikes - I ride GSXR's for goodness sakes - -
if I was into good looks I wouldn't ride them-
Mockery - congratulations on the bike - from what I know about VFR's it's a winner - my bad

Bike is now a work in progress, and has been ever since the really crap weather started. I'm starting to go a bit craaazy though, being confined to my cage.
For now i'm mainly focusing on functional issues, most notably the spongy 14 year old suspension. I do have plans for making it pretty down the line, but first things first, right?
Here she is, stripped down, suspension is out and being rebuilt over east. A lot of cleaning still to do, swingarm to come off later so I can get the crap out of the eccentric hub.
These Anderson stands are terrific!
Half-system exhaust coming sometime soon, gotta recycle the front headers; before and after:
Cleaning out the brakes a bit, full rebuild sometime down the track...
If your chain and sprockets look anything like this, probably best fuck them off... wow, the wear pattern is quite visible on that front, even on this reduced image.
And look what I found inside my front sprocket cover... anyone else get this happening much?
That's it for now, just thought I'd share some pics in case anyone's interested

Good to see ya sorting the safety/reliability aspects of the bike first. Looks like you've got your head screwed on right
I wish you the best of everything with your bike dude, and look forward to seeing you/it on a ride soon enough.

HOW DID i miss this thread ? . Oh man these are mucho respect ! .If i had the spare coin id buy one as they are such a nostalgic lovely bike. Especially when i was over in Singapore with my mate who is a senior Service Tech at Honda Aus and he said that you could get all the HRC gear for em, cams , pistons, flywheels, you name it . Aaaaah.
Need a custom exhaust setup on it, lots of holes in brackets, give it the total race bike look. How much did you pay BTW ?. Love it, please take care of it, and do it up to race bike look ..... will turn heads everytime !.
EDIT : BTW if your ever handing out test rides, please pm me !! . Ive only ever ridden one up an alley when it was almost brand new at a bike dealer, and that was far from enough. LOL
Why arent Honda making these brilliant bikes no more !!! >:-(

+1. I reckon 400s would be an awesome size for a "first bike" (they seem to have proper brakes and chassis, as opposed to the shit in the 250 market), just don't get why they don't make them new.
Congrats on the VFR - as to what I reckon.... what g0zer said - clean it up, etc.... i'd love one of these as a first track bike

Well after I called dynotime and Russel said he'd never done a VFR and would have to be working blind, and I got a recommendation for this guy in sydney who does them for the 400 racing, so he's re-springing and working some black magic on the valves...
Plus it turned out they need rechroming so probably would be going in the mail anyway.
Saf I paid $3400 for it, so I feel I can reasonably spend a bit more to get it in good shape. Unfortunately as an import, Honda Australia don't officially support it for parts, so I have to order everything from a shop over east. They do have a fair bit of HRC gear available, but from what I heard the further you go down that path, the less road-friendly the bike becomes, especially once you start chopping the air-box and going for ram air it has a real top-end bias. One day I'd like to race it when i have way too much money on my hands and another bike for the street, but for now i'd prefer a more friendly torque curve down low.
Can't wait to get it dyno-tuned once the exhaust is on!
As for the racebike 'look', well the panels are pretty shagged, more so since somebody stole it and dumped it around the corner. I'm starting to dislike the 'bug-eyed' look too, so it definitely won't be staying plain and black forever...
It now has no ignition (was destroyed) but a toggle switch, and i've ground off the ignition mount from the steering yoke. That's a start I suppose

Working blind = order required parts from honda spares, etc?
Not that I'm a suspension expert, but jeez... I'm pretty sure they're not a quantum leap away from anything else in the honda stable?

Yer but Russ is a bit of a guru, and suppose he was justpointing out the obvious, he's not worked on em before and might take longer etc. Plus the parts aren't necessarily from Honda, you might source aftermarket parts etc, at least he was honest.

Some more pics, I think I'm almost to the stage of starting to put things back on!
Hollow swingarm allows gravel to travel down the back and wedge up the eccentric hub adjuster:
and finally, something on my bike is CLEAN!
Looking back at the pics on page 1, well it's quite a difference and so far I'm really glad I've done it, especially for the learning experience.
