    Mr DJ's MT-01: Sport Tractor

So picked myself up an '09 build Silver MT-01 from the lovely chaps over at 5 Star Yamaha a couple of months back now.

Have decidd that it is going to be a very long term keeper, seeing as they were only manufacturd for 4 or 5 years in total, I hardly ever see them around and I kinda like the idea of still owning and riding it in another 10 to 15 years...so lets see how that goes.

Have comenced with the tasteful mods, not to sure how far I'm going to take the customising and I fear will be limited by what is available on the market (although Germany seems to have a fair bit of kit).

Here she was on the first day of purchase. All 1670cc of her. Despite the silver looking beautiful and deep in the sunlight, I found the standard bike a) a bit quiet and b) a bit too grey/silver all over.

First thing to do was add to the orange highlight theme, I realy like the contrasting bright orange on the exhaust and intake covers, so I picked up some Repsol Orange Rim Tape, adds a bit of highlight to the rims and ties them into the overal bike design, apologies for the pic (the rim tape looks a little red) but once again it looks flash in the sun.

    C.jpgD.jpg

I expect to add a couple more tasteful orange highlights to the bike where I have large chunks of silver, maybe on the engine mount covers (take a little trip to Mr Potato for some pin striping).

The next thing on the list was to open up the exhaust system, get the thing breathing and sounding like a big air cooled V-Twin should. I waited until the 1000km service and took her down to 5 Star for some exhaust options. Unfortunately for this bike the choices were fairly limited. I could either go full custom open system (how do you spell loud?!?!), spend nearly $3k on an Aprakovic system from the UK and lose the pillion seat in the process, or go the simple slip on option.

I chose the latter and picked up some Stain Tune cans, they allowed me to retain the factory exhaust covers and exhaust fan (mounted under the seat to extract the huge amount of heat coming out of the things).

While getting serviced, I also had a BMC air filter installed, as well as a Power Commander module to compensate for the better air flow, and set me up for some future Dyno time.

The factory 6 piston stoppers fitted to the R1 front end are good, but under heavy braking you can really feel the brake lever squeezing right close to the bar and running out of puff. While I was getting the first service done, the 5-Star boys did me a good price on some Goodridge braided lines. I decided to go silver colour (can't have too much orange at this stage) for both front and rear brake line, along with the clutch line as well (hydraulic clutch on these babies). That is 3 less rubber hoses.

The brakes are super responsive, with limited to zero travel now. Heavy braking up in the hills is now a delight and not a worry.

This weekend (and hence the reason for finaly starting a write up) was the delivery of my aftermarket mirrors. The original Concept MT-01 looked fukn mint with the low swooping handlebar, unfortunately ADR kills these sorts of lines and the factpory mirrors looked a bit "Meh!!"

So; two stubbies and 30 minutes later, I give you the results. I decided to stick with black to try and minimise how much they stand out (the bike looked dead sexy without any on at all).

Factory Mirrors 1.jpg Factory Mirrors 2.jpg CNC Mirors 1.jpg CNC Mirors 2.jpg

Next thing to do is to find a good V-Twin tuner here in Perth who deals with cruiser motors, I'm thinking getting some Devil Headers and get rid of the Exup valve system at the same time - need to do my research on benefits vs. cost. Then it's back onto the Euro websites to try and dig up some decent custom, there is bugger all in the US and Australia. Germany and UK are looking like a goer (if I can learn some Deutsch lol).

A 6 pack of beers/RTD to the person who finds where the hell these air intake covers are manufactured/for sale (pic below). I have been searching for 2 days now to no avail!!!

Check the air intakes on the side of the alloy frame.jpg

I also need to make a decision on wether I am going to add crash protection, as well as deciding wether my bling will be chrome or carbon look...decisions....decisions....

Saw orange highlights on a silver car today, very RS (Porsche, not Aprilia) and GT40 - I like!

So you realise this bike is actually 12 times the size of your old bike...

Go carbon, no crash protection (but good insurance).

And I reckon the lump of air-cooled iron weighs 12 times as much . Every time I stand back and watch it idle on it's side stand I start to laugh. The number plate literally moves about an inch left to right on idle.

Full Comp Insurance...just the way I like it.

Oh...and I will probably never catch up to you and the amount of carbon fibre you have on that little beast.......unless I bite the bullet and buy BST rims.

this guy seems to think they were an original yamaha accessory. Tom McQuiggan's Webpages (15/12/08 post)

hey how do you find your mt-01 over long distances? I do a weekly 300km round trip on my 900 hornet - would the mt-01 be an improvement?

Where did you locate anyone to knock up a custom exhaust system?

i took a pic of a custom MT-01 parked on a melborne footpath. It was totally awesome and fell somewhere in the streetfighter, new wave modern "loosely cafe inspired" bracket. I'll try and find a pic and post it, good luck - its a handsome mans bike you have there

It may not be to your taste, but Yamaha did a bikini fairing that I thought looked quite spiffing. I'm thinking this, low bars and low exit exhaust?

Being a 90% urban bike I'll skip the bikini fairing for now, with the factory gearing and 5 speed box it's a perfect Urban Assault Vehicle.

It is more fun around town than even my Street Triple was once you get used to the extra weight. Cars give you plenty of space on the road (so far), it tips in nice and solid anywhere and just goes as soon as you twist the right wrist.

Anywhere up to 140km/h in any gear (keeping it above 1700 - 1800rpm) elicits a big fukin grin, anything over this speed for an extended period of time and it needs either another gear or longer gearing. plus the fact that the info on the dash is pretty basic and there isn't even any room under the seat for a pair of sunnies means that it does not make the best tourer.

Ideally I'd pick up a second hand 'Busa or ZX-14 once I finish paying off the small loan I took out on this bike to cover all bases. In saying that though, I did a Northam - Toodyay - Perth run the other weekend and it was perfectly suited to that - the seat is the comfiest bike seat I've ever been on. Although I needed a fuel stop about 130km into the trip. :p

Any decent exhaust shop that does custom work and has experience with bikes should be a goer. I Was considering Roo Racing for mine as they do their own pipe work and silencers.

Actually I know a guy (close friend of a good mate) who owns a performne exhaust shop NOR that has done the exhausts on my last several cars, along with exhaust work for our social group plus he does all his own engine & custom work on his very tasty looking Harley. I'll see if he did the exhausts on that as they look like straight up lengths of pipe just mandrel bent, welded and chromed.

In the mean time check out Roo Racing.

There is a bikini fairing on Ebay for sale think its $500. has a couple scratches but when it retails for around 1.5 k its worth picking up even if you know you will use it in a few years time.
    Peace out

Oh, and one more point, without any form of Traction Control this bike does not like a) cold tyres, b) greasy roads, c) wet roads, d) shit tyres.

The back end very quickly wants to step out, from 2'000rpm at half throttle if any of the above are in action. On a dry road and warm tyres however it sticks just as well as any other bike then rockets from 40c straight up to $1.10
