    My first sportsbike/streetfighter/project bike

    Hi guys,

I finally bought myself a sportsbike. Always had the desire to buy a sportsbike and streetfighter it, and on new years eve, I decided to put this plan into action. Bought myself a ZXR 750 from a bloke who had started the process of streetfightering it, but had given up. Luckily, the bike was still licenced and registered till May 2011.

Here's a write up of the things that I've done on the bike so far. Being my first ever project, my knowledge is very limited in this area. So, please feel free to suggest anything that may be of help.

Anyway, this is what the bike looked like when I first picked it up.

I've made very few changes to it so far. I replaced the Motocross headlights with these-

Replaced the mirrors with bar end mirrors.
Put one of these things on instead of the stock overflow tank for the radiator liquid.

I decided to buy a Katana windscreen and place it on top of the headlights. Carbon-Rod helped me build a few brackets in order to mount the screen. Upon doing that, the bike looked like this-

The problem with this set up was that, the brackets that held the screen also held the speedo, tacho and the temperature gauge. Everytime I hit speeds of over 70-80kmph, the brackets used to get shakey and constantly hit the headlights. Then I decided to get rid of the screen and lower the headlights further down. This created a huge gap between the speedo, tacho.......assembly and the headlights, which kinda gave it a very awkward look. So, I decided to get rid of the tacho and the temperature guage, and just have the speedo at the front.

Instead of having a temperature gauge on, I decided to get a thermo cap for the radiator.

Searched three Supercheap auto stores and wasn't able to get one that would fit my radiator. These caps are manufactured by CPC Auto Components in Melbourne. Spoke to one of the blokes there, and he said that, it would be possible to get a cap made for my bike if I sent my radiator cap in. Haven't really looked into that one yet.

I've got a whole bunch of things planned for this bike, but with restricted space in my groundfloor unit, and busy work schedule, I'll be doing this bike up as and when time permits. Here's a pic that might give you an idea of space restrictions I'm facing.

Cool project, good idea to change the headlight too !

I don't worry about not having a temp guage, just get a mechanic to confirm that your thermo fan is working correctly and do without. I've run my K1 fighter without one for years.
Unfortunately, you could get pinged by the filth for not having idiot lights on the bike so you may want to think about that shortly. The speedo mounting bracket you have there looks like a good spot for some LED's to do that.

As for overflow bottles, on my watercooled fighters, I went to the wreckers, found a suitably shaped overflow bottle and mounted it under the tank with cable ties and ran a longer hose coming from the radiator overflow.
It's a minor pain to check and refill if you're losing fluid but bottles hanging off the side look shite IMO.
I haven't had to touch mine since I fitted them.

    Good luck with it

What, no room in the kitchen? Depending on the place, it's a bastard of a job getting the bike in there but once it's there a kitchen is a spectacularly good work area.
    - clean floor. Easy to find things when they drop on the floor.
    - sink nearby to wash hands and other things when required.
    - food and drink nearby
    - good lighting
    - things don't get stolen
    - just spray bleach everywhere and wipe it all down when you're done
One owner. Only driven gently on Sundays. Sold to best offer. First to see will buy. Reward offered for safe return. Coming soon to a cinema near you. Available for a limited time only.

My waterbed broke this morning. Oh, I don't have a waterbed. Bugger.

That was the initial plan, but there's very little room under the tank.

Yup, found it impossible to work on one, with the other parked next to it. That one sold pretty quick. Put up the ad one evening, and it was gone the next afternoon.

I liek the bar ends you have put on her, are you going to replace the front end with some USD's (if you can find some to fit)?

What about the subframe and tail section?

Good to see you off the cruiser anyway

Been way too busy and haven't had time to work on the bike any further. The first thing I'll be on to this weekend would be, shortening the wires at the front, so that they don't hang out. Right now, I have tied them up using zip ties, but that's just a temp solution. Haven't put much thought into the subframe and tail section yet. Doing it gradually. Like I've mentioned earlier, this is the first time ever I am working on a bike by myself, so it'll be a while before I get my head around these things.

    headlight issues

I was trying to hide all the excess wires sticking out. Instead of cutting the wires, I just hid the excess wires under the tank and now, the only wires that stick out are the ones that connect to the headlight and the indicators. Everything works fine, but my headlights have stopped working. I have checked the globes and they are fine. The relay seems to make a noise when I flip the high beam and low beam switch, which implies the relay works fine. The parking lights still come on, but like I said, the main headlights don't. Got any clue what might be going wrong?

good call not cutting the wires, that is asking for trouble. Check obvious things like the fuses first then look for the headlight supply and start tracing it back to the fusebox. If you don't already have a wiring diagram now is a good time to start looking.

Checked the fuses already, forgot to mention it earlier. Don't have a multimeter, will have to wait until tomorrow to get one and I guess I can start checking if there is any current flow in the wires.

Missed the start of this somehow. The bar end mirrors look like they worked out OK.

Good luck with sorting the lights. A multimeter is a must when trying to sort this type of stuff out.
