My sons first bike build - 2001 XR50R

I thought I posted this on here, but anyway better late than never:

My older brother gave his sons old 2001 XR50R to me for my son. It had been through my brothers 4 kids as well as half of the neighbour hood. Even the big kids used to ride it around.

When I went to pick it up my brother told me that he never did any maintenance to the bike, it had only stoppped being ridden because the rear tyre was flat. It also had a set of front forks that were very bent. So here's the bike and work so far in pictures.

The bike as I picked it up... My son was around 3-4 months old

Here's an update on where I have got with the bike, still waiting on a new rear tyre and tube. Sticker kit to go on and chain to fit. My son is just over a year old now and has been helping Dad down the shed. Excuse the mess in my shed, I'll get to that after all the projects

I have totally stripped the bike, the frame has been bead blasted, the rear of the frame has been welded and a new swingarm bush was machined and welded in place of the OEM oval bush

I have stripped, wire brushed and painted anything that needed painting. Plastics and front end are chinese, they didn't fit perfect first up but I have sorted it. Hope you all enjoy

Bits and pieces, Joshua and new pup Astro are checking the quality

    Plastics off

    Motor out

When a chain looks like this it needs to be replaced... okay!

DID chain and other Ebay parts

Got the frame and swingarm back from Collie Machine shop. Frame painted silver and starting re-assembly

My son Joshua helping dad in the shed

    Plastics fitment testing

Hope you all think it's coming along. Graphics to hopefully be fitted this weekend. Still trying to easy out a few broken bolts in the exhaust and then I'll fit that and the rear rim. The little beast starts first kick. These things really are unbreakable.

Maiden voyage to come, Joshua can't quite touch the pegs just yet.

You are building future memories. Take lots of pics.

Cant beat a Honda 50 for sharing the love between 5 - 50 kids introduction to bikes.

Yeah my first bike was an 1970's XL70 Honda. Just about unbreakable, it'd even do 90kph. We used to strap a dolphin torch to the front mudguard in case we kept riding into the night

My older brother ended up snapping the drive shaft being stupid, that bike never had an oil change in it's life let alone any maintenance. Just goes to show how tough those bikes were.

My first bike was a PW50 and it just wouldn't die. Had plenty of stacks, treated it like dirt and it was still going when we passed it on. Would have been about 15 years of red dust and hot weather with the only fluid change being topping up the fuel.

It's nice to see someone putting the effort in to tidy one up, good job.

    Update
    =====

Got the bike back together and received the new tyre and tube in the post. I removed the old tyre and tube today and found that the rim was quite rusted inside. Some wire brushing, Ranex rust converter and then rust guard paint and it was ready for re-assembly.

Got the tyre and tube back on and started inflating the tyre... but obviously pinched the tube. Some tyre slime and the tyre was good as new

Cut and fitted the new DID chain as well and fitted the chain guards.

Still to come is the exhaust and full sticker kit before totally finished, but here's the pics

This is how to start it mate!

    Here's the throttle

    I found it Dad!

that's an awsome build looks great

you and your son are going to have a great time with that, both my boys had a QR50 and rode it forever even after they moved up to YZ80 they still used to drag the QR50 out the shed and hoon around on it. I've added a photo of my very first bike you wouldn't believe the punishment it used to go through I used to sell rides on it to kids from scool for 20c that would almost fill the tank back then.

My younger bvrother had a QR50.. I can always remember my brother trying to get it going then all of a sudden it's up in flames in the back lane. My brother frantically dousing the flames with handfuls of sand. After that the bike still went hahaha

The only maintenance to the QR was dad blowing out the exhaust with the oxy, that'd wake the little 2 stroke up

One of my mates up the road had an XR75, we used to ride together quite often and get up to mischief. His bike didn;t have a rear mudguard, I canalways rememebr after hitting up a big mud patch coming home and hosing the mud off his back. Those were the days, the old Hondas just kept on keeping on.
