nah, one of the guys on asf might be able to bend it out for me.. which is my preferred option - before getting more bits I cant use
besides, i wouldnt mind dropping that cash into doing polishing on my frame.. or servicing the engine...

Ok, next stage.. strip down - starting phase 2..
where should i start, assuming i want to put it back together so it actually works..
Is there some sort of method to removing a loom and engine from a bike ? I've never done that before.. cant be all that hard..
do i need to tag things, take photos ? make special notes ? or just pull it all out piece by piece ?
I'm going to replace things eventually, but i'll worry about that when i get the frame and engine back..
anyone got any tips ?

I took photos and labeled everything as i took mine a part, having a manual will make life easier when time comes to put it back together. Its always easier to take things a part then putting them back together, but should be pretty easy to rebuild

Doing one of these up myself, not as a streeter, just back to original. I got a disc from UK that is essentially a microfiche parts catalogue exploded. I printed it out into a bound manual (60 odd pages) & refer to it frequently along with the manual. If it helps, PM me your details & I'll do another one up & mail it.

when removing the loom get a roll of masking tape and a black marker, and make a note of each plug. thats what i have done in the past with my cars and bikes i have rebuilt.
as for everything else photos will help.

awesome mate !
I was going to say, email or put a copy up on the web.. I'll use the highspeed printer here at work ( laser or copy machine ) and bind it up using the jiggy gear here..
I'll take lots of pics as i go, I cant see alot of project work on these bikes.. surely others ask these questions too...
Now I'm looking at new tail's for the bike, headlights and front light cowls/brackets to suit a bike like this...
I'm just having a whale of a time getting this airbox off so i can crack at the carbies..
I might get a pile of clear plastic bags to put screws, bolts and other stuff with.. so i dont loose anything.. there's bolts on everything on this bike.. it's almost rediculous...

I've just completed that task, the carbs are just as much fun with all the cables attached. Dread the thought of putting it all back together. I'm just getting ready to drop the motor out. ps: if your bike had the original metal hoover pipes on the tank, don't ever loose them, they are worth a bomb to buy, if you can find them.

I've got em, but what the heck would you use em for ?
I'm looking at a fuel tank without the holes in it... do you know if the newer models of ninja tank will fit the 89 ? cos those hoover holes dont really serve a purpose other than aesthetic, do they ?

Believe it or not, they serve a really useful purpose. I've been told by people who did their apprenticeship "time" on these old girls that they used to run pretty warm. The hoovers actually filtered cooler air right down on top of the donk to aid the cooling. I've just this evening secured a pair from the UK for my old girl. I've suspected for awhile that she used to be a racer as lotsa stuff was stripped out, but i've been slowly collecting it all back. Mine were missing & replaced with some old corrugated hose, obviously lighter.

I'll have a look thru the micro fiche 2 moro as it's also got listing for the J & K series which followed ours. I'll see if there is any similarities with the frame & tank mounts. Will let you know.

nah, you take the fuel tank off.. by removing the 4 bolts.. 2 either side, just under the seat.. and the assembly slips vertically up and should come free like that..
it's a bit weird how they did it, all arse about.. but i guess there's some method in kawasaki engineering... i think..
