Sounds like you have a plan.

Just remember, the 250 is your limit for the first 12 months so you can learn how to ride. Anyone can hold the throttle open in a straight line, personally I think you'd be better off spending the time ON the bike (learning how to turn it properly), rather than under it with the engine in bits, but each to their own....

Rider upgrades will do more for the bike than spanners will

    Motec > M48 > Overview
your M48 will let ya run a lambda sensor making ya tuning real easy.
Apparently it uses dos based tuning software, and you can even get it to do some basic data loggging if you have the upgrade.

Thro does have a point but by the time all the bits are made up and tuned on the bench dyno, you could have easily done some trackdays and very well could be asking for a few more hp. things like this don't happen over night.

    Moved to Member's Projects, Evo.

If you want to do a full-on build thread, just start it and I'll move this back to 2fiddy, but this is going along well. Keep it up. Interesting to read, dood.

I agree corners are half the fun......if im going to upgrade a vehicle of any type I do all aspects of it.....
Ill look at a dual brake setup for the front.

And Ill look at an angry cam profile to make sure even off boost its still going hard.
One thing I dont want to do is have a sudden boot.....with the skinny tyres it will snap lose.

I guarentee those recent batch of 180sx turbo crashes by P platers were booting it around a corner....boost kicked in...rear snapped out....they hit the brakes and it all went pear shapped. Age old rule...if in doubt power out. Im not sure if that applys to bikes...but Ill soon find out.

So can anyone recommend a supplier for ninja 250 motors....

Yoda wants to know ... are you R-E or R class ? Adding a turbo to a 250 will put you out of class if you are R-E.

Otherwise, carry on! (+ post Dyno results)

I dont think it will put you out of class.... some states over east it would.

go for a 4 cyclinder 250cc then you will have 17000+ rpm to play with. Also here a pic of a modded 250r - will try and find the one with the zx6 swing arm and front forks...

I have an early set of forks and swing arm from a ZX6-R. About a 96 I think. I was going to build a stunta but am going to build a later model. Would you be able to use them?

my calculation wern't close enough b4. get the throttle bodies/injectors off a litre bike. that way you wont be maxing out the duty cycle. get the stock fuel pump off the same model bike aswell.

if you need brace the swingarm use the stock one and fab up the stiffener yourself. doing a swingarm swap will prolly mean a longer swingarm thus slower turning prolly a loss of feeling if the new one is too stiff aswell. The beauty of the 250 is its light and has a short wheel base. keep it that way. a turbo shouldnt add too much weight that it requires diff forks and shock. should be able to get away with oil/springs and maybe adjustable shock. but marty would be the one to speak to about this.

    ^^hmm.

Turbo WILL add quite a bit of weight.

They're not lightweight things - the exhaust housing on them is cast iron - and you'll maybe need to make the header pipes out of stronger / heavier steel than the standard ones, to support that weight without them cracking.

If you run intercooling you need to take the cooler into account as well... sure its only a few kg here and there, but it all adds up.

On the plus side you can completely ditch the exhaust system, past the turbo.

    edit:
I'm sure the original poster knows this, coming from the modified car world... but for the rest of you...

    wooo swing arm mod.
From a legal point it states quite clearly....250cc capacity. So im staying at that.
The age old statement of there is no replacement for displacement IMHO bit the department of transport in the arse. We now have P platers who cant handle turbo power delivery and killing themselves.

In anycase...fairly sure I can bolt on as big as turbo as I like. The IHI turbo I found costs a whopping 250 Aud brand new and weighs a huge 2.1KG. intakes and exhaust props are 22mm. Made to spool up on a 20-70HP car at 500-600cc. Its the smallest turbo I can find so far. I do really want to keep it as small as possible I want to make power over the entire RPM range as much as possible. I dont want a lag wagon.

So for a bike that can spin 14-15k rpm should be quite nice.

One thing im not sure on is exhaust noise. With cars your not allowed over a certain DB limit. Does this apply to bikes or can I be as loud as I want.

And yes the best exhaust for a turbo system is no exhaust at all as the back pressure comes from your headers into the turbo.

There should be a sticker on your bike that says what the legal limit is for your factory exhaust. As far as I know, anything higher is illegal.

Is that turbo the RHB2 off the Daihatsu Charade GTti (3pot DOHC 12v turbo @ 100hp)? I'm pretty sure there was the equivalent in a ball-bearing model (RHF2 or something).

I have yet to see or hear of a bike being noise tested.

My RGV passed pits with aftermarket arrow pipes, they didn't even blink.

Trying to find a second hand RHB2 from what I have found is nigh on impossible. But there is a few reasons why I dont want one anyhow. One being that they are a journal based turbo.

Garrett do a GT1231.... its ever so slightly to big id have to clip its wings which seems a waste. Easy enough to do though since you can rebuild Garretts. (comp 29mm , Tubine 35mm. Bearing type is journal) ( to clip wings you split the turbo up....build up weld around the in and out....machine out the inside to the new measurements you need....then grab the in and ex prop and cold grind to the new radius.....CBF)

IHI make one that is about 30% smaller again. The RHb serries turbo was replaced by the new RHF serries. The smallest in this line up is the RHF3 which has an inlet of 19mm and an exhaust of about 26mm. From what I understand you can rebuild these too....but I havent found the rebuild kit yet. Not that I could kill a turbo in 10 months without antilag and some decent jooce...The best part is its a bally turbo....quicker spool.

Shortfuse....from what I can find from the input from Mex is that another 250R 08 model did this conversion and I could possibly use the ZX6-R swing arm.

I can see some good points.....larger rear brake....larger rear foot print....(more power down) If this is going to be longer...then yea I suppose i lose some of the bike handlings ability. Also lose a bit more by the fact that I would have a larger rear tyre.

But then the other argument is....the replacement for displacement is technology...so in effect I have a bigger bike....(about 50-65 HP) so maybe a bigger tyre isint a bad thing. Seeing as though those kind of figures are normally seen out of 500cc plus bikes.
