The Old Oiler - Update / How to's

Well this is my 1990 GSXR 750 L as I picked her up straight home and took a few piccies , 20 minutes later and those stupid fucking flames came off . ( WTF ! )

Anyway I got her for a reasonable price considering the issues I was about to have ( that I didn’t know about yet Fucken ), one head light worked on low beam and the other on high , the indicators did as they pleased when they pleased , anyway I figured I’ll give her a bit of a clean sort the indicators and replace the head light globes all good !

Next thing I know all the panels and bits and pieces are spread all over the patio !
How the fuck did that happen ? ( Think I forgot to stop ?!? )

Well while she’s naked I may as well do some fixing of the issues I knew about while cleaning her .
First thing the head lights cut off all the tape . OH looky black crispy wires everywhere Fucken yay !

After fucking around chasing all the burnt wiring all over the loom and putting in new higher amp wire’s I found that the fuse box had also suffered at the hands of previous owners so another trip to the electrical store for more goodies and bingo new fuse box !

I was thinking as I was tooling I should make a note of what goes where best I jot this down !

I got all the years of crud out from every nook and cranny I could get at ( I still don’t know how the front sprocket moved with that much crap inside the cover Fucken !! << (( this word will pop up often !! )). Plus gave the mudguard , under seat plastic’s , fairing mount bracket , instrument mount bracket and hugger a coat of shiny black

Being the forward thinker that I am it was the Wednesday before the M.A.D ride and I was in a panic slapping her back together for the ride . Keep in mind I had about an hour each night after work . Success ( just )

After not doing much to her apart from the odd ride to work and here and there I figured I may as well finish what I started . So I started ripping panels off again and cleaning/stripping/swearing/bashing/swearing more/fixing all the stuff I noticed first time around .

The engine paint looked like shit so off it came !

On went a couple of coats of engine black the oil cooler also copped a touch up !

Stripped all the rusty brown crud off the starter motor and gave it a lick of silver .
Also gave the alternator a clean and paint .

The rear wheel also got the treatment that kaki green was just not happening . Gave the outer edges a bit of a shine up while it was off the on with some more black ( there’s a pattern forming here ! )
On went new chain and sprockets plus new engine oil and oil filter.

Ok I aint been for a ride in awhile so I put her all back together

    So . . . . . . . I needed to fiddle more ( it’s a medical condition I can’t stop myself )
Staring at the top triple clamp was hurting my brain there was this poorly cut crapy fake carbon look lino looking piece of shit sitting there it had to go . Rip it off and scuff and scratch marks as far as the eye can see ( Fucken ) .

I had picked up a few months earlier and old skool style steering damper time to kill two stones with one bird ? Or some shit like that . Out with the make shiny buffing gear and off we go I gave the steering damper a buff also ( it was the purpley colour ! not on my fucking bike that colour mate !! )

Score ! ! ! An original factory Frame mount bracket for the damper WOOT !
( Thanks to the guys at Motor Cycle Masters in Kewdale for this I went through like 20 something boxes of brackets and general shit and 15 or so frames before I found this , very patient people )

    First the scuff !!

    Then the buff

Ok time to put back together and fit that damper

Those key tags gave a 10% increase in BHP !!

    Next ! . . . . Foamy air filters
Time to rip the carbies off and have a looky and clean them up a bit

They weren’t to bad considering , inside and out but a couple of cans of carbie clean and there a bit better

Time to have a look on the inside a bit closer and adjust the needles out come the slides .

The inside of the diaphragm chamber was pretty good a lite blow out and magic just like brand new 18 year old chambers !

The slides were a bit cruddy bit a quick wipe and all good
    Before

    After

Needed to richen her up a bit for the foamies the left is standard needle setting ( to the best of my knowledge ) the right is one slot richer

Back together they go , also had the float bowls off and gave them a quick spray with the carbie clean .

The little rubber bung’s that block off the vacuum balancing tubes were all fucked but we’ll get to the fix later

A quick check to see if all the butterflies are in sync , fiddle with the balancing screws till I’m happy they right

Time to go back on the bike , Throttle cable back in place .

All the hoses were pretty much fucked so off to the auto shop again , Fuel filters I picked up during the week

Simple fix for the vacuum balance bungs

New fuel lines and filters next routed the long way to allow room for the filters

Next to fit the breather hose for the diaphragm chambers, tucked nicely out the way ( clear tube because it’s all the had in the size I needed )

Because the filters had such a fat lip on them and due the carbies being paired so close ( 1&2 then a small space to 3&4 ) the two outer filters got trimmed down to allow a sort of overlap

Well that’s the story so far there’s more to come as the funds free up ( just need to figure out how to block the bloody misses from ebay FUCKEN !!! lmao )

Thats a top looking old gixxer

Funny how that works... everyone wants the latest and greatest until they see a well restored classic bike and then they want a project of their own
    stuff

Top work mate!the carbies part will probably will be a good reference in the future, :thumbsup. Specially interested in what kind of paint you used to re paint the engine. Is it the same type that could be used for fairings from bunnings or is it different?

the old girl is certainly being well spoilt
hope you get to put plenty of enjoyable kilometeres on her

that engine paint came up really nice.
did you spray it while it was in the bike?
and how long did it take you with all the cleaning/prep work?

like others said, great write up.

    Thanks ppls !

    Acko
I did the rims myself not to hard to do realy most suzuki's ( and probly most others ) i know already have the outer polished but for some reason the paint over them .
All i did was hit them with paint stripper to get the kaki off ( not in the foto's ) to get it back as far as i could .
Then out with the wet an dry sand paper working down 150grit to 600grit just to smooth it off . Before i painted them i hit the hardware and picked up a couple of those cheap buffing sets ( you get 2 buff disc'c and 2 compound's in each , about $20 each ) and a cheap and nastie $30 drill ( my compressor died so couldn't use the die grinder ) .
Then just gave both sides about 1 hour each side till nice and shiney . Then mask off and paint .

    Bunyack
    20 mins no shit
Sorry dude was thinking about a warning !

    Xuaxace and Duffman
The paint i picked up from various auto stores , it was a bit of hit and miss trying to find decent brands that went on smooth with a good finish
All done with foo foo ( preasure packs )

The engine was done in the frame masked off what i could then just cleaned up any overspray .
Hit it with a lot of paint stripper to get the kaki off plus original paint i had to get a few spots with the wire buff , then used a spray painting gun with prepwash to clean off any dirt/oil/grease and hit it with the compressor air gun ( this is where the compressor died )

    Cheif Wiggum
Without including things like chain and sprockets , oil blah blah blah , i would guess about $200 ( just in materials , paint and hoses etc )
Time is a differant matter i was doing bits and pieces most nights after work and weekends ( when i could get away from the family ) , but not sure all up .
I get a kick out of doing this kinda stuff so wasn't keeping track for me its fun !

There's heaps more i want to do to her just need more time and $$$$
i figured i had better post up the work so far rather than have my project thread 5 pages of my dribble ! LOL
