    to paint or to powdercoat???

Im at that stage where the bike is stripped and Im going to send it for sandblasting. I was advised that powdercoating the frame etc of my CB125N is not the way to go. Apparently primer and paint is the better way!??

I had my frame blasted and zinc coated then powdercoated and have no issues with it. If you want to modify or weld to the frame later, paint is much better for spot repairs.

i'm just about to pick up my frame from the powdercoaters for our CB200T

besides darkfibres point of easy to patch up, don't see any other reason why you wouldn't powdercoat your CB125 frame.

Powdercoating is definitely more durable than paint, but if you do decide to paint it get it done in two pack as that is also very durable.

I had my frame blasted and then painted in two pack but beware if cost is a factor powder coating was half the price.

From comparing restos with both, and I've seen a few, I would give the nod to powder, both for looks and durability. As for chipping, ever had to remove a bit of powdercoating inadvertantly applied to the wrong part of a frame?(ie, not masked). Bloody tough.

Great advice guys...from reading this, I think powder coating seems the go for me. Especially being time-poor..its would be alot easier. Interesting to hear Flint that powder coating is the cheaper option too.

    I'd go with powedercoating too.

Just out of curiosity, who recommended painting over powdercoating? A painter?

You'll see why in the quality of finish.

PC for a roady, paint for a racer (easier to repair/modify) me thinks.
block all threaded holes, bearing and bush surfaces before PC, pain to remove as Ranmar says

just remember PC goes on very thick, all holes and threads will have to be tapped/die run over them, certain points will have to have the powder ground down to fit (eg: swingarm, sidestand ect)
There are two questions in life.
    1:Which way do I go
    2:Whats the lap record.

I was curious about this too. Going to respray some rims, frame and forks soon and would rather paint as I've done a few resprays before so have the equipment already.

Was just concerned about durability. 2 pack paints are well ahead of standard acrylic it seems. Without hijacking thread too much, anyone here had experience using both acrylics and 2 pack paints and if so, is it technically more difficult to spray with 2 pack paints?

(Ignoring the safety stuff, I'm aware I'll need to get a proper suit and breather)

When I had my frame blasted they recommended powder coating as it was half the cost but originally my frame was painted so paint was the go. As for an idea of cost powdercoating $250' paint in two pack $500 and as far as Im concerned it was worth it, I didn't want the hassle of powder or have any problem down the track if I have to weld etc. Powder has it's place but paint suited what I am doing.

I have. No comparison as far as durability goes. For spraying there are some traps for young players but if you follow the directions on the can/from the supplier and go easy it'll come up find. It is just a bit harder to hit the sweet spot between orange peel and runs.

If you frame has the VIN stamped in it, be aware that powder coating will go on so thick it will bury the numbers and they will no longer be visible. Seen it happen on my mate's Honda Chopper.

The powder coaters i use (SBR powder coaters Batswater) only put a thin layer on the vin number so it can still be seen.
