Some say he eats sidchrome for breakfast
Some say he only showers on even days of the week
Some say he put an R1 motor in a coffee machine
All we know is he's Hewie.

Say what now?

Any new updates on the SP hornet?

Gutsy question. You're a shark. Sharks are winners, and they don't look back because they have no necks. Necks are for sheep.
Hi Hornet, looking good mate, I have been on this Forum for sometime but never posted a thread etc. I also have a R1SP but spend more time on the R1 Forum under the name of Knackers. I was told by a guy from Canada who owns one of these very special bikes to take a look at your thread, so I have spent an hour & a half reading it. I can help you out as far as wavy discs which will be far superior than any other if you are interested. I know the guys from S3 Performance and have there ways on my 09 R1.

G'day, Steve
I think I found a build thread on your bike when I was searching an R1 forum.
I previously tried some S3 rotors but they didn't make them for the SP. At least, they didn't back when I bought a set. I ended up selling them to Crashlington for his R1.
I actually have a US company working on a veeeery limited run of rotors simply because I contacted them and asked nicely if they did them. They got back to me and decided to do a couple up. You might have heard of them...

Braketech, that's funny this is the company I have been supplying all the info to. Jeff is the bloke I have been dealing with, top guy. I sent him an e- mail and asked the same question and have been helping with any info he needed ever since. They should be ready in about 45 days, I have placed the order with gold centers, black bobbins & in s/s, front and rear. Small world eh. I think I have seen your bike on the IMS Gilles website if your name is Dan, mine is also on there now as well. I will post you some shots when I am on the computer next time.
Cheers Steve
Oh no everyone is going to know his real name now!!

Yeh, Jeff is who I've been in contact with. He's been asking what colour to do the carriers in and also for dimensions, too. Indeed, a small world.
We both thought that having gold would be a difficult one to get away with due to the gold Marchesini rims behind the carrier. The current rotors on mine have a titanium colour for the carrier and it works well as a contrast against the rim, letting you see it easier. I told him I'd go the titanium finish over the black. I'm not sure they are going to do different options on the carrier colour so it'll be interesting to see what they decide.

Yeah Jeff said that there were other people with different views on which colour to go for and that maybe if they made them to order which would be a pain in the arse, it could add $100 to the cost. I like the gold because that is what the bike came with and I think it suits. I just fitted HP Brembo discs too and they are gold and look the goods, each to their own, it's what you like not what other people want. Also gold centre on the rear should look awesome and the standard rear looks similar to Ti now.

I prefer a different colour as it lets you see the Marchies easier.
With what I currently have the spokes are easily visible and, to me, add to the look.

As I said each to their own, which is a good thing otherwise they would all look the same. When I said about the S3 Performance guys I wasn't really talking about their discs so much as 2 of the guys Brendan & Michael used to work with me, really good blokes. by the way my SP number is 523. All the best mate.

So, a bit of an update.
GRIPADICK posted a ride and then bailed so Rich took over. I wasn't sure of the route but had an idea it was in the hills and, being a night ride, wasn't too keen what with all our bounding marsupials that frequent those parts.
Anyway, I rang Rich and confirmed it was going to take in all the nice bushy areas of the Scarp so I decided to bail. I was subsequently chastised and berated and even had the old "She'll be right" thrown at me from Rich.
So off I trundled.
Roo at approximately 60km/h (stuck in 1st, etc).
Cracked fairing.
Cracked screen (professional hand model used).
Broken mounts on the headlights, inside the front fairing.
Broken headlight/dash mount. This had previously been painted to match the R1SP colour so I'll have to get another one done to replace it.
Showing the break with the front and headlights removed.
So far the replacement for the damaged parts has come to a RRP of over $2500.
On the positive side there is apparently one less 'roo to worry the rest of you.

In response to the above deleted posts...
The SP was and is rare. Only 34 or so came to Australia. It had certain parts that were unique to it and other parts that weren't. I've tried to keep those unique bits and replace the others. I want to make it something I'm proud of. Some bolt-on parts and some custom work is how I see that happening. Standard levers and foot pegs, being silver and of stock manufacturing, just didn't fit so they needed to go. As for the rest, it's a matter of making the bike mine. I want it to look a certain way and I want it to have some nice, some exclusive, some rare or just some different parts on it - a bit like a bog-stock R1 with a white paint job, no?
What I've tried to do is stick with the theme that Yamaha sort of had going with the Gun Smoke (dark metallic purple) and the gold. Putting black rearsets and other black bits on wasn't the way I wanted to go. I wanted to (try to) stick with gold and Gun Smoke. I have had the pillion pegs painted, the swingarm axle slider recess, the side fairing panels, the instrument bracket and other parts I can't even remember painted. I had the sprocket colour-matched to the Marchesini rims. I've tried several other things that just haven't worked and some that have. Some people know the issues I've had with matching the Gun Smoke, most don't.
I've bought and junked several hundreds of dollars worth of bits trying to get the colours and parts right and I'm still talking with some companies about other parts. I've bought paint that was supposed to be Gun Smoke from the UK. It didn't match quite right, either.
The unique items on the SP compared to the stock '06 R1 are;
exhaust cans (gold end caps)
slipper clutch
gold pistons caps on the calipers
Marchesini rims
Ohlins suspension
I've replaced the exhaust with a full Ti Akrapovic system, had it ceramic coated black, hand painted the pop rivets on the exhaust and had the springs done in Teflon. I looked at putting the end caps on but it wouldn't have worked.
I've also replaced the calipers with Brembo items.
That's it.
Any and all other parts are stock R1 items that can easily be put back on. I've tried Sato rearsets but they were way to yellow. The gold Pazzo levers match the top of the forks but few people seemed to like that. I did. I like the black ones, too, though, so they might stay for a while. I've given the gold ones to someone else.
