Spuddy's Beach Buggy *pics added*

For those of you who read this thread, I was looking for a beach buggy. Well, I found one. 5k, mechanically good, cosmetically not too bad, brand new tires (and these puppies are BIG) and exactly the body shape i was after. I just got home and parked it, and i'm a little disenchanted with it, because...

The bitch died on me the first time i turned it off.

I dont know if the guy had it charged so that he could show us how well it started (looks like a new battery), and we went for a decent test drive with no problems, but once i took it for a long haul (it was in kenwick, home is hamersley) the lights started to fade, the indicators stopped working, and once i turned it off i couldnt turn it back on again. Got my housemate to come out and jump me.

So PSB, once again I request your assistance. If any of you are an autoelectrician, or know the name of a good autoelectrician that is happy to work on an old VW, please let me know.

Also, the name of a good mechanic, again one that is happy to work on an old VW. This old girl is in need of a thorough service, she is a bit sputtery and the gearbox is a whore, but thats bearable for now.

Work that needs doing:
Auto-sparky work - like IMMEDIATELY
Full service
Re-attach spotties
Rig up some side-intrusion bars
New soft-top (old one is very badly sun damaged and cracked)

Fun stuff:
Replace the ugly rectangular beam front bumper with something cooler - thinking chrome tube steel
Side bars, partially to hide the ugly underside of the tub, partially to save my ass if someone crashes into me
Re-trim/replace existing bucket seats
New dashboard
New gauges

All info, suggestions, and offers of help are VERY welcome - im a complete noob when it comes to VW's, especially 40-something old VW's

As Breyten suspected the alternator is gone. Depends how far gone it is you may only need to replace the regulator or new brushes. Alternatively buy a new alternator and install it yourself (easy to do).

Yeah, one thing about these things - they are very simple machines. Should be a piece of cake to take care of

Yep, they're pringles cars - once you pop...

Mine started like this:

and, some time later, ended up like this:

I miss that car. The only vehicle I've owned which started me giggling like an idiot every time I climbed in... I'm toying with the idea of doing another one.

Gluck spuddy - defn sounds like "not charging" issue, generator slipping on the belt maybe? Or possibly, just possibly, he's whacked a 12V battery in a 6V engine setup...
