About 6 weeks ago a mate asked if i was interested in swapping my YZ250f for his spare road trail bike, a shining example of japanese quality in the form of a 1997 Kawasaki KLX300R.
After doing a bit of net searching on the bikes details and him sweetening the deal by throwin in a sweet nitro Rc monster truck plus the fact i have no car and the yamaha was just sitting in the shed unused the swap was done.
Dont have any pre pics so here one i found online.
God knows what Kawasaki were thinkin with the green and purple but it had to go.
After hours of watchin supermoto youtube vids i decided its the way to go so more net hunting was done for parts and tips.
So far ordered and just waitin for them to arrive-
small LED indicators
Black seat cover
MX style rear fender
17x3.5 and 17x4.25 Excel rims and spoke kit
320mm EBC rotor and adapter
As mentioned the purple had to go so one day when i went into the garage to look for a screwdriver i decided to take the wheels of the KLX a couple hours later it was a bare frame sittin on a milk carton.
After a couple more weeks procrastinating i started stripping the frame, after 5min with the sander i gave up and started lookin for powdercoaters that can sode blast aswell after finding none that were close or open during the holidays i once again attacked the frame myself this time with a wire wheel on the drill. After 15min and little progress i cracked the shits and gave up.
Then i gave paint stripper a crack, GREAT SUCCESS!! made the paint piss.
*note-wear safety glasses i got some paint strippe rin my eye and it really really really hurts!*
About 2hours later the frame was bare metal.
Back at work now so this mornin i pinched the girlfriends car loaded up the frame, tank and swing arm and headed to work.
2 pak matt black was the colour of choice, after a bit more prep work the parts were ready to go.
Got home about lunch time with the parts and was straight into teh garage to begin the rebuild, it has been 3 weeks since i stripped it down and was kinda guessing my way thru but have managed to get the wiring loom, engine, swingarm, shock, forks and tank all refitted. As well as goin thru with turps and cleaning every part. By the way make sure ur turps bottle and water bottle or not side by side while ur distracted with something else. Turps tastes like shit and stings ur nose. Must of looked like something out of the Simpsons
Gonna strip down the stock wheels and paint the factory hubs before i lace them to the excel rims, couple other small things to do and will be ready to go!!
Still have to order-
New muffler
Dynojet kit
black plastics
new headlight/surround
Hopefully have it all finished before i go for my R class in a couple months, the biggest wait is gonna be for the rims as they have to be custom drilled for the bike then posted from the US
I do have pics and soon as i work out how to get them of my phone i will post em up.
