cool project. what's the story with engineering the 250 chassis with a 500 engine in it? any major issues to get it rego'd?

Haven't tried to cross that bridge yet. Have done a lot of research and the frame has to be made from "erw" or "dom" tubing
with a standard of ASTM A513 (american standard). I'm going to use tubing 1 size larger than the loops I've cut out with a wall thickness of 1.6mm. I am planning to add an extra piece at the front below where the oil filter is, The pipe will be sand filled when bending and mig welded back into the original frame, hopefully that will satisfy any engineer. All welds will require xraying as well.
Engine swap project has been abandoned. Quite simply there is no way that the engine will fit into a 250 frame without MAJOR modifications to the frame. Unfortunatly I dont have the workshop equipment to do this sort of work. Have to admit I'm a bit gutted I was really looking forward to riding such a small bike with that sort of power.
So now i have to decide what to do with the 2 bikes, sell Suzy2 and build a street fighter type bike out of the 500 or sell the 500 and spend some money on decent carbs etc for the 250.
bugger! Would of been a weapon!
Damn that's no good mate, there is a gs450 motor for sale down your way ATM, it'd make a nice swap![]()

Been awhile since any posts. been busy at work 6 days a week but getting out most sundays. Rode the gorge road again last sunday. 19klm in 15 mins ave speed 76kph on a damp road. Still think its 1 of the best roads in Oz, mounted a camera on the bike to do it but the speedo cable started to vibrate its freakin' brains out so all you can hear is the bloody cable vibrating. the vid is on Youtube if ya wanna have a look.On bike. Adelaide Mannum rd from Tea tree Gully to Gorge rd turn off - YouTube (on bike Adelaide to mannum). Goes for about 9mins, its not much but it was a hell of a lot of fun.
Will be going back to melb at the end of the month so will be getting the tank fixed and repainting.
cheers Geoff.
Good stuff mate, loving the rebuild. Im doing a 1980 gsx250 cafe too will post a project bike thread up soon. keep up the good work and the updates!
Back in Melburnistan. Cold wet and no fun. Stripped bike, tank being fixed. Toying with the idea of repainting whole bike.
Got bored while tank is being fixed so decided to make some rear sets. Have set the pegs back 130mm. Can't wait to ride her and see how they feel. good thing is that I still have an original set of everything so I can go back if I don't like it.
Looking good!
Went out wed after melb cup. To Yarra Glen then on to Kinglake. Foggy and pissin' rain. still had a good time though' Speedo siezed up on the way home so have ordered a small speedo off fleabay. Getting the tank, seat etc repainted, same color but in 2pack. Should'a done that the first time. Ah,well hindsight.
Lookinh like a nice bike. Nice work
Hi all Here I am sitting in my shed having a beer while the rain comes down, thought Good time to update my thread.
Speedo arrived from china, so mounted it and thought, would look ok with a tacho, so will be ordering a tacho soon. Might go big tach, small speedo.
(excuse the soap box)
Now I'm all for buying local and supporting Oz business but when the local bike custom shop in Collingwood is selling the same part for $120 + postage and I can get it from China for $32 wih no postage IT'S A NO BRAINER. Come on guys, if you were asking $60-$70 I WOULD have buoght it off you.
The other pic is the comparison of the gear linkages for the rear sets
Cheers for now Geoff.
I hear what your saying Geoff the tail light I bought for my bike was over $100 posted in oz and $60 posted from the states. The speedo you bought what ratio is it? Or do you know what the stock ones are? I'm looking at upgrading mine but can't find any info on what the stock one is.

Speedo was listed to fit "japanese and british bikes with 12mm spigot. I just ordered and hoped for the best. Seems to be pretty acurate so far. The Tacho I think is 2:1 thats 2 turns of cam shaft to 1 turn of tach drive.
Hope that helps.
Cheers geoff

2pack paint. Sooo much better
Looks good mate, looks a fair bit shinier.
Hi all. Have been given the order from the minister of finances, "Cant have 2 bike rego's". So have decided to sell Suzy2 and keep the gs500. Going to build a street fighter type ride out of her.
Hoping to get $2500 for Suzy. She is on Ebay
Cheers geoff.
