XS250 basket case to Cafe Racer

XS250 basket case to Cafe Racer

My first bike project $80 from last weeks Quokka, Just got my learners so may as well start with a 250

Going to be a severly limited budget build as most of my spare cash is going to my other 3 hobbies

    and

    and the new 1

    to be fitted with

    and

After some advice and any parts I need that you have lying around, that you dont need, waiting for a bloke like me to come round and buy them off you

Also chasing info on going out to a 400, do I just need xs400 barrel and pistons? will the XS400 DOHC top end mate up?

Nice, I'm doing the same thing - but started with a running bike (which is now looking very similar to yours!)

Looks like you've got a lot of work on your hands. From what I've been able to research - you just need new barrels and pistons - the XS250, 360 & 400 are almost identical bikes.

Looking forward to seeing what you can do with it - I REALLY need to get a start on mine again, things are going too slowly - too many projects at once!

The DOHC head wont fit, completely different motors.
Btw I've got a Haynes XS250 workshop manual barely used if you're interested. Swap it for your RB26 to go into my Calais :p

When you said basket case, you were not kidding. If you are doing a lot of custom and new parts, starting with a basket case works. However if you are restoring with standard parts you will get a shock. Go to a bike wrecker for say a set of gauges and you may very well fall over at the price. Keep your eyes open for a second bike for parts, my spare parts bike paid for itself in the first 2 parts I needed.

    ^ +1

bike is indeed a basket case but good to see it being resurrected. i'd go with darkfibre on this one, a second bike might be a good idea unless you're going to go custom with lots of it

Yeah Ill just go custom, the only bits I really wanted Ive got. The only other original bits I need is to get the motor to run.
I picked up a mate from the airport last night and he said I can have 'an old blown Kwaka 250 road bike' that been in the back of his shed for years so Ill see what I can scab from that and everywhere else. A rat rod bike (ha ha)

PM me with any questions dude. Definitely grab the other bike .. maybe we can use the front end as the XS one looks totally trashed.
What diameter are the forks? I've got an old pair of forks from an SR 250 that has good stanchions but the legs are designed for drums ..
Let's see if we can't figure something out though and make a bitsa.

I used to have one of those 161's in an old HG ute years ago. I don't know why, but it was the sweetest, smoothest running engine I've ever had in a vehicle!
    And I've had a few!

I wish you still had it so I could buy it off you
Hard 2 come by the old 161S, although last time I went looking I came up with 3 in a week believe it or not

I like the look of the fenders on the bike with the green tank, what sort of nic are they in? I'll trade you my spare engine for them.
