    Yamaha SR250 Cafe Racer

    Hey guys and gals,
Just thought I'd show my cafe racer project ..

Currently about 2/3rd's of the way completed ..

    I started with this ..

Then cleaned everything up and took it to bits ..

Then cut all the rubbish off the frame like pillion pegs, brackets, and smoothed all the welds ..

Here's the tank and frame painted ..

And the motor as it was ..

And here it is after I rebuilt it, polished the combustion chamber, cleaned up the ports, and painted and polished it .. I'm hoping for about 25hp, up from the standard 20hp! I've also cut around 10.5kg of crap off of the bike..

And here's the engine back in the bike with the detailed carb etc ..

An overview of where the bike is at with the engine back in the frame, the front end together, bobbed front fender and so on ..

I decided to do a complete rewire with my own loom .. and hid all of the electrics under the seat .. which I still have to build..

Building a custom instrument panel to take a 60mm speedo.. chrome bezels for the LED idiot/indicator lights ..

Hope you like it! Hopefully I'll finish it in the next few months around uni .. I'm planning another project already ..

You can follow the full story here where I've kept a diary on caferacers.net .. 1981 Yamaha SR250 Cafe Racer

    Regards,
    Ben

Awesome work there, brought a tear to my eye as I used to have one of these, only recently sold it to a work mate.

My first bike, I also had ambitions to modify it, but ended up buying a second bike and put most of my focus on that.

Looking sweet, can't wait to see it finished.
Are you building up a traditional cafe seat unit or doing something different?

Excellent! You're obviously not taking shortcuts and the bike looks better for it already. Should be a cracker and I can't wait to see it finished.

Cheers! This is actually my first road bike .. I plan to build a few more "specials" though .. I enjoy the challenge of looking at a bike and figuring out how to make it look "right" in my head, and getting out the grinder to make it happen. I'm also doing a Yoshimura GS1000S replica for a friend of mine at the moment with a few twists..

I'm still deciding whether to go for a manx norton style tail section/seat and run a bobbed rear guard.. or a fibreglass hump a la ducati sport or countless 60's race bikes with no rear guard .. it's a convoluted issue with the SR250 frame rails having a kink in them from the spine junction it joins to the rear section .. I'm going to start on it next week and hopefully get fibreglassing soon.

What sort of bars are you putting on - flat, clubman or going the clip-on way

I'm planning to fit clubmans (also known as "ace" bars) and I will be adjusting the footpeg position by fabricating rear sets soon.

I wired up most of the ignition yesterday.. soon I will have it running again. I had it running with the original wiring shortly after I completely rebuilt it a few months ago but had intermittent problems and decided to pull my finger out and rewire it from scratch and hide all the electrics (including the battery) under the seat.
