Smile Yamaha SRX250 super lite thumper rebuild.

Just thought I would seperate this from my other thread...

I am out of work at the moment and decided i need a project to keep busy and really enjoyed building the little bike, 5 min later on ebay I found myself looking at an obscure little bike.

A Yamaha SRX250. here are some of the specs:

    Handmade Tube Frame
250cc multi valve twin carb single cylinder with balance shaft
mono rear shock and motorcross looking box swingarm
18" rear wheel 16" front????? okay yamaha what ever you think is best...
    126kg!!!!!!!! this thing is LIGHT!!!!

the SRX was supposed to be an evolution of the SR probably the most commonly cafe'd bike today

here is a pic of what the bike looks like but without the belly pan and in a lot worse condition

here is one cleaned up, not to keen on the colours but it will give you an idea of what the frame and style of the bike looks like. not going for this look but its the closest i have found.

24 hours later its in my garage and has been stripped, frame has been sand blasted and I have ordered a whole heap of stuff for it. I am hoping to have it finished late January.

    I am thinking

    black frame and wheels
dominator headlights, black billet mirrors and indicators
custom tail based on the original
lowered clipons and chassis filler panels removed
    wrapped exhaust and short can

not sure what color for the tank, tail and front guard yet.

    I will keep this posted.

the plan is to build a minimalist style new skool cafe racer. I can't wait to ride this bike it is so light and the engine sounds sweet!

I am away this week but made some progress before christmas.

the frame has been painted and the engine stripped. side covers are alloy and I dont want them shiny and showoff looking, so I am going to keep them machined and blasted looking but just clear coat them.

the crankcase, fins and head are all gloss black and the fins have been polished shiny, it looks pretty nice.

photos will be up within the next few days.

    cheers!

Same motor as the XT/TT 250........ mate, these things were an absolute pain in the arse for cracking heads between the exhaust valve seat insert and the spark plug. Not trying to kill the joy, but it might be worth your while to have a leakdown test down on the motor cold and hot.

yep they had a problem with the heads that was solved with a different squish on the later models and all the srx engines. also a revised exhaust clamp, as the problem had to do with the rate this part of the engine cooled quicker then the rest. I did quite a bit of research on it and the engine in this bike is one of the revised ones. but thanks for the heads up!

UPDATES!!! this has been slow due to christmas.

Sofar the engine is painted and back in the frame. I have left the side covers alloy and will clear coat them once I have polished them a bit more.

I stripped the tank to find that there was a dent that has been repaired, damn... I wanted to leave it steel and clear coat it but now have decided to paint ot black.

I reshaped, repaired chopped and plastic welded the rear guard, there was quite a few hours there, The rear twin lights will suit the twin dominators quite nicely I think.

It is coming along nicely and the only hurdle will be the carb. the floats were sticking and the bowl was overfilling, I fixed that but the carb may need rebuilding I dont know yet. have to wait till its back together to see how it runs, these carbs are a bastard whirly gigs ad doodle whatsits everywhere...

some photos for now... How do you like the reshaped rear tail?

I just love the frame and tank on this bike, a real cross over between old school and early sportsbikes!

    Awsome! glad you like...

I picked up the bike for $500 ish and it has not been registered in the last 3 years.

I have just painted the tank, tail and front guard black. it was a good test of the new hlvp spray gun I just bought. I need some practice with it because the finish is very peely. I have done 2 coats so far but will have to let it dry for 2 days and sand back to a smooth finish before doing the next 2 coats. I used enamel and the finish is TOUGH!

after the 2nd coat the parts went into the sun as its pretty hot today and they have set hard after about 2 hours and are very glossy but not smooth enough. I could probably get away with buffing alone but wouuld like some more paint thickness to work with.

painting always takes ages... guess thats why paying a pro costs so much.

I like it so far, nice job on the rear end it looks much neater and shorter, dig the twin taillights.
I was going to suggest you put on a few gangster bullet hole decals to cover dent in the tank and leave it metal, I guess it's a bit late now you have repainted it.
Motor looks mint, keep the pics coming.

Do'h! why didnt I think of that!!!!!! I was going to pinstripe the bare metal tank and would love to leave it brushed steel.

I bet there is not a single undented tank anywhere for one of these bikes. I will see how the black turns out. the theme is now going to be all black with gold decals and rim gold stripes, white fibreglass wrapped headders and black mirrors, headlights ect.

the polished fins should break up the black a bit and I hope its no too black!

more photos coming later today. cheers!

There's a tank connected to this bud, don't know if it's the right one or not.

Very nice job so far, lovin' it. Advice if you want it, the last coat of enamel, thin it to about 7%-80% thinners. It'll shine like the sun. The tailliight look very familiar are they landrover by any chance?
