2 stroke maintenance road vs dirt

    hey psb new member here,

looking at getting my first road bike, keen on getting a 2 stroke as i ride a 2 stroke dirt bike and i love everything about 2 strokes the power, smell, weight

i was just wondering what the maintenance is like on a road compared to dirt, as im quite competent maintaining my dirt bike

    cheers in advance

I reckon the maintenance schedule on a road-ridden two stroke would be about half that in the dirt.

Having said that I reckon you're off you're rocker riding a two stroke on the road. Get something with some torque man!

What stroker are you looking at on the road?

How often do you check your valves, every 10hrs for someone with balls on dirt. 20hrs?

I'm pretty sure it's every 10,000km for mine. More like 1:5 compared to dirt

    LOVE power band,
its like driving a v8 compared to a turbo car, i prefer the latter

by half the maintenance schedule do yu mean half as often?
    doing basicly the same things?

chain lube, box oil, sprocket wear, air filter, general checking for worn/loose parts?

Chain lube, chain, sprockets, air filter are all easy quick checks so I wouldn't lengthen those intervals. Valve clearances, top & bottom ends would be longer on a roady

What!!! Are you crazy? You open the throttle, scratch you balls, call your girlfriend ... hmm speed seems to be increasing ... go through McDonalds drive-through, pick up a slab from the bottle shop ... speed is definitely increasing ... post a letter, scratch your balls again ... woohoo I'm outa here.

If you're accustomed to performance dirt bike 2 stroke maintenance you'll have no problem with a road going 2 stroke.

Just remember they're not all the same - the commuter spec 2 strokes like the NSR150 are good for more keys than the high performance 2 strokes like the RS125/RS250, RGV, and TZR.

Bear in mind the 250s are generally 2 cylinder though, so even though your maintenance intervals may be halved, you have 2 of everything instead of 1 on the dirt bike.

And the fuel bill is atrocious. Yes you can tune them to get a bit better, but i put 8.5L of fuel in the RGV the other day for 77km.... which is a tad thirsty (worse than my v8 cage). On the plus side, economy when caning the shit out of it seems to be about the same economy as suburban commuting - they don't get a lot worse.

But as far as 250cc road bikes go, they're a lot of fun. As far as the peaky power delivery/power band goes - this is what your left hand and left foot are for.

Yup, definitely worth it. Having to pit for a splash and dash every time you go through a town on a country run when every other bastard can skip the servo is a bit annoying though

On my RGV i can normally get around 130-140km before hitting reserve if its a decent ride without extended fucking around in traffic or short runs over a long period of time.

Its a 17L tank, I think it normally hits reserve at around 12L used.

So given that, your max range is probably somewhere around 170km, give or take (including reserve). My bike appears to be a bit thirstier than most at the moment, but not by much.

But I wouldn't be pushing reserve too far.... i suspect bussleton would be pushing it. You might make it, if you were cruising on the freeway getting decent economy.... but it would be close. I'd certainly fill up at halfway first time and see how much fuel you used (or run to reserve, and count on getting about 1/3 of the distance to reserve out of the reserve)...

Rs is a much bigger tank and every second trackday, prob 700ml a day.

It's all about how you ride. If you are riding around out of powerband you are just using maintance throttle, 1/4 and you oil pump is just ticking over, and you are wasting heaps of fuel that doesn't get burnt. You are just oiling your crank and barrel. In powerband your oil pump doesn't back off, and sends the oil in there, and your burning everything you send at it. It is important that you use a really good oil, as any engine that produces 220hp per litre of capacity will go pop if anything is a miss. A trackday will have mabey 7 sessions of over 10 laps, at 2.4k each and you will pour over 25l of fuel at wot in 140 kays and use over 700 ml of oil. I've added an extra bit of adjustment on the oil pump as last top end had worn some plating shiny. Am confident that the tolulene in 98 octane "cleans" your engine and the oil film off your barrel at the same time. The elf website advertises that it's race unleaded doesn't do this...
