    Cagiva 125cc Mito

    Sup guys n gals,

I'm going to be buying a bike soon, and because I don't have much cash to spend I was probably going to get a crappy Megelli 250R (everyone says it breaks) however the dealer is trying to get me to buy a Cagiva 125cc, the Mito, which is a 2 stroke. I've heard lots of stuff about how 2 strokes are less clean and all this other stuff and that the only up side is they have twice the power.

However I recently read, that most of that information pertains to really cheap 2 stroke motors, like chainsaw motors etc and that more expensive 2 stroke motors are much cleaner and very well built and designed not to mention the whole "double the power" aspect.

Basically I was wondering if anyone has any information on how good the Cagiva 2 stroke engine is?
(Sorry about the huge post lol)

better bike all round, it will teach you good braking and cornering, plus theirs plenty of peeps on the forum to help you with tech help, but bare in mind it will require using good quality oils, and regular maintenance. mind you their are plenty of 2nd hand 4 stroke road 250's around for sale at the moment. A 2nd hand zzr250 twin or a VTR250 would be better than a single cylinder magelli,

You said that you don't have much cash to spend and the dealer is suggesting a Mito?
Theses are at the more pricey end of the learner approved market. If this one is cheap, chances are it's had a hard life and may end up costing you quite a bit of cash in the long run.

The mito was an interesting bike, i remember looking at one when i was first getting my L class license i think it's RE now. Very light and 7 speed gearbox, i ended up with a road trail bike because they handle learner abuse and minor spills very well compared to bikes with fairings.
I'd be taking these guys advice, the honda VTR250 is a great bike i taught my wife to ride on one from new and she's looking to sell it with only 1000kms on the clock so definitely don't waste your money on something new or something old and high maintenance. There are plenty of great bikes in the middle of the range.

Awsome bike but how many K's are on the clock . Bare in mind that if it does need a rebuild eventually ,youcan always put in the 150 kit. With the derestriction kit in them they are a very quick little bike and more then enough for the hoon laws.
    Cheers

Up keep is paramount. Servicing is a must as $1900 odd on parts alone for a bottom end rebuild is a little steep. If your on a long ride and the oil flickers on and off stop asap. Apart from that i'm on my third Mito and just can't get enough Handling is awesome, Braking is Awesome, with alot of feel that you get from a single large disk. Pity it doesn't come in a twin cyl 250 version like the Aprillia. 160 big bore kit will put alot more pressure on the big end which i've mentioned above is costly... Love carving up the big boys at the track great bang for buck

I own an Aprilia RS125, which is extremely similarto the Mito. They're an enthusiast bike at the top-end of the learner market, expensive to maintain due to more frequent servicing. I bought mine for a large number of reasons, none of which may matter to you.

Sit on as many bikes as you can before deciding. Work out a realistic budget, then weight that up against your emotional commitment when you find one that feels like you. Do your homework on the condition of the bike before you make a final decision.

    Happy Shopping.

How close to a 100/110km/h zone do you live? Two-stroke power is fun, but you'll find it more enjoyable if you can go fast without having to worry about sticking to a low limit all the time.

nah dont bother with the polini big bore kit. too much hard work to get the head machined right and it eats out ya crank bearings hell quick.

the stock engine is not too bad. regular maintenance might save ya but new barrel and piston is about $900 if things go wrong. about 250 for a piston and rings.
LHS crank seal is a potential problem for leaks and leaning out. can be checked easily if ya know how.

I do all my own work on my bike after being fuked over by ppl who know shit all about mitos. never again. I've now done 2 full rebuilds with full bearing replacements. it aint hard just take lots of photos as ya go and try not to loose parts. bag and tag!

2 stroke isn't only about power.

its about weight, too... and in the 'burbs, a 120kg bike is going to be a lot more fun than a 150kg bike.

I took one of these for a ride a couple of days ago and had a whole pile of fun. The one that I was riding is for sale and you will pick it up for around 4k (from a bike shop) so you should get some sort of warranty with it as well. It was extremely clean and well looked after and didnt have many k's on it. PM me and I will tell you where it is if you are interested.

Which is why I take a CBR125R out to the post office a couple of times a month.

Okay, so maybe more "power delivery" than "power".

Wow thanks for all the replies everyone =)
The Mito in question has 300km's because it's the demo Mito, but the salesman said he'd take it down to 9k because it's not brand new. I said I wanna go with the lower budget but I was prepared to spend a bit more on a high quality bike, problem is - I wasn't sure if the engine was high quality or not. The salesman said I'd just about never have any problems with the Mito and wouldnt need to bring it in for services very much at all... Is that true?? From what some of you have said about upkeep and servicing, it'd be a high maintenance bike.
I've passed on the Megelli and now I'm looking at the Mito or a 2010 Ninja 250R.

So much for my small price limit

Well, if you want to pay 9k. A brand new 2009 had a rrp of $8700 + onc. You can pick up 3 year young bike with low kms for $5k-6k or are you talking about the sp525? and always service your 2 stroke, there are not the type of machines to wait 'til they break, it ends up costing you a whole lot more then a simple service or ring change

I wouldn't say that the salesperson was lying, but did his nose grow after he told you that one?

You do have to service them but they are dirt cheap as you will only need a plug , 0.5 ltres of gear oil and possible clean of air cleaner and that's it . as for rings ,they should be good for 15 - 20 thousand kms and then that is a cheap and affordable repair considering that will take you abourt 4-5 years to get there.

^^ or 9 months, if you actually ride the bike you purchase.

as to paying 9k for a 125 stroker - you can do better than that.

I'd cut your budget in half, get a good secondhand bike (that will seriously be just as fun to ride) and save the 4.5k for the next bike.

Yeah I'll get about 90 thousand K's on it in 2 and a half years (by the time I get my fulls). Which is why I need a new bike; I commute a lot. But I am thinking of not going with the Cagiva because it's such a small engine, but then I thought maybe because it's a 2 stroke it would be do able.

The Mito is such a nice little bike to ride, I assisted Bertie rebuild two of them and due to his keg injury have had the bike for the past year or two and really enjoy riding it. I also hired one in italy which had done a million kms and I rode the wheels of it for a week. I would love to have one myself infact.
