    Honda NSR250R - Opinions?

    Hi All,

I'm giving serious thought to a project motorcycle, the Honda NSR250R MC21 or MC28 in particular.

Are there any particular pitfalls that I should be aware of with them?

How rare are they, and is it worth holding out for a dry-clutch model if it's not going to be a track bike?

    Any input is appreciated.

    Cheers

MC21 over MC28 if you want easier power mods, owned a MC21 for years, only pitful is dirty powervalve kill PGM's (ECU's) so clean them regularly and keep cables adjusted.

With little mainenace there are no issues! I have the dry clutch in mine, never run with the wet so cant comment. As for rare, yes, but they do come up for sale a few times a year.

Nice bike Damo, that's the Tyga seat & subframe by the looks?

I've seen a couple of R's for sale, looks like a dry clutch SE or two have recently sold too.

The noise factor of the dry clutch is my main concern, I've heard the term 'pavement compactor' and don't know if this is something I want to live with or not. Is a wet clutch engine able to be converted to a dry clutch easily enough? ie are parts readily available to do the job?

The dry clutch on these things hardly makes any noise at all in comparison to other dry clutched bikes.

As stated above, MC28 only if you plan on living with the stock 45hp. Getting more power out of them requires the very rare and expensive HRC ecu plug in cards, and removal of all the road-use wiring loom which means no lights, indicators, etc

The earlier models (MC18, MC21) can be powered up quite easily with a simple wire splice/cut modification.

Check out tyga's website for the details. 60+ hp is a walk in the park with basic bolt ons...

I've been considering one myself for a while...

I'd already sussed out that you were after one mate, so I found you this mint looking "1995" model here in Perth Honda NSR 250R | Motorcycles & Scooters | Gumtree Perth

That makes it an MC28, right?

In seriousness, it looks like they come up reasonably often.

Here's one that's already been fully modified in QLD at $8,000 1991 HONDA NSR250 R ROAD LOGAN RESERVE QLD LOGAN RESERVE QLD

There's a '92 'R' (wet clutch) for sale in Vic for $5k with 28,500 on the clock and Rothmans fairings.

But I won't give away the one I'm looking at.

I'd already thoroughly researched Tyga Performance's website, hence the question. ls2_297's and I think alike

I've just got to decide if it's worth selling the RS to fund this project - the thing is running brilliantly now so it'd be a shame. Maybe if I can score a better job...

Steer clear of the 300cc kits. No need for fancy HRC cards when you have aftermarket ignitions. Only downfall is the lack of good replacement pistons with 14mm gudgeons. Cranks can twist sending 1 cylinder into meltdown. If they don't idle smooth the centre crank seal is shot. Great bike though.
