    Kawasaki KX80 setting up

Hi Looking for advice on setting up my sons KX80 (1997). It runs pretty flat and struggles to run clean until the power band kicks in. Then goes great.
On the mixture screw. is it 'in" to increase fuel richness or 'out'. I've got the idle screw all the way in to make it idle. and the mixture screw is 1.5 turns out.
Whats the best approach to removing this flat spot so its easily for him to ride.
    all advice appreciated.

rebuild carburator propperly and (check all jets are the recomended ones and and pasages are clean)
Idle screw determines the height of the slide and could well be worn as to have no effect any more.

They have an airscrew rather than a fuel screw..... turn in to fatten up. This adjustment will really only have an effect up to about an 1/8th throttle, max. How old is the top end? I assume the airfilter and muffler are in good nick, no splits in the inlet manifold etc and you've obviously tried a new plug. At this age, a worn jet needle/needle jet may be a good place to start. Does it free rev when you crack the throttle..... ie when it's warm in neutral, will it pull up cleanly through the rev range without the same characteristic gag? Has the problem only just surfaced or been a steady down hill thing? What position is the needle set at? May be an idea to standardise the carb (assuming the pipe and filter are stock ) to see if that doesn't help. The motor is having transition problems, it's a case of finding where.

Cheers guys for the advice, but it seems I'm expecting Powervalve type performance for a pre-PV bike. So it On/off power for my lad to play with. I love it but its his first 'big bike'.
But i will go though it and enure everything stock. I bought him an older bike so that he learns to fix it and get some mechanical sympathy. instead of a new bike that go's.
Whats the best manual to get. factory one or the clymers one. Also best place to get carb rebuild kits and jets from.
