    Out of Fuel ( I think?) - RS125

    Hey Guys,

Just took my RS125 out for a ride, great day for it, who says I need to work.

Anyway cruising along the beach road up Burns Beach around 60kph, 4th gear around 5500 rpm, all of a sudden the bike loses power gradually until it comes to a stand still.. S**T.

First think I check is the Fuel Tank (which i also checked before I went on the ride) looks fine to me. I decide to double check the oil, no problems there either, almost full as I only topped it up yesterday.

Leave her to cool down for around 5 mins, then tried to start (no choke) kicked over slightly for around 5 seconds, then cut out. tried again > no dice. ummmm WTF? So i try with choke on > no dice again.

Decide to flick it onto the reserve line - try to start with choke off, no dice.... try to start with choke on> no dice. Try to start with choke on and a little throttle > hey hey kicks over and dies after around 10 seconds idle. Kick over again with Choke on and a little throttle > Kicks over and sets into a high idle, slowly reduce choke and then it sets into a normal idle... WTF? Leave it idling for a little longer, jump on, pull off, running like a dream again, actually it seems to be running a little better then it was in the low end?

Anyways i go to the petrol station and fill her up, fits in 7 Litres and that's almost overflowing. flick her back to Main tank and off i go no dramas.

Now this is the whole point of my thread after my above ramblings . My bike has a 14ltr tank which i believe includes a 3ltr reserve which leaves a theoretical main tank of 11 liters. Now considering I could only put 7 litres in to the tank I'm bloody confused as anything.

Anyone got any ideas, or am i screwing up my calculations or understanding of the litre capacity or how the main/reserve fuel lines work? or could I possibly have another problem that is not even fuel related? I was thinking fouled plug, but when she kicked over again and since has run without missing a beat I'm not so sure.

I also need to check the power valve as the bottom end seems to have more power now and the top end doesn't seem as good,,, however it still has no dramas revving to 11k and still has the power band feel at 6kish.. probably just my imagination.

Sounds like you have crap in your tank. Wait till you have gone on reserve and then try and get the tank off so you can run it dry. Take the tank off (bolts front and rear) and make sure you've turned the fuel tap off before removing the pipe! Then flip it over and 2 screws hold the fuel tap in. Take it out, clean it and put it back together, remove the fuel pipe from the carb, make sure it's clear then refit, refuel and see what's what! Apart from that i'd say clean the carb out and see.

And definitely check the PV system, they're awful for getting coked up!

Thanks Sheehan. It appeared to be a combination of issues causing it.

    1. The Tank had 2 Month old fuel in it (cleaned it out) using similar method to what you said above and put new in
    2. Carby was dirty as mofo, cleaned that
    3. The bike was running way to lean on the idle jet, but to rich at the top which was causing it to flood when cruising along at 60-80kph. Took it to Ric at Motomax and he has tuned it really sweet, its really running so well now down low, does wheelies (well sort of) the front wheel comes of the ground but i'm too much of a pussy to even attempt to keep it there The top end is also much better, pulls hard all the way to around 145kph at which point, i think due to my weight that's the limit of the bike

As for the PV, it appears to be working fine still getting the nice kick at around 6k. When I get around to buying a new zorst from either Ninjaa or Loud I'll give the power valve a clean, i can't be fucked pulling all the shit off to get to it atm

Hey Ninjaa, yeah mate, i have not had a single issue with it since Ric tuned it..... The only issue i have now is that I hit a massive pot hole in the road and fucked my speedo. so thats my project for the weekend

Pretty sure it's picked up off the front wheel. Had mine off for awhile could be wrong

Sounds like it's just come loose

yeah, got to do some experimenting. The cable which connects to the front wheel was hanging loose when i pulled over after i hit the pothole, so i reconnected it but still doesn't work, so i think i may have either broken something or something has fallen off, going to do some research on the weekend and see if i can figure it out. Don't have a front wheel stand but figure I can somehow get it up off the ground and spin it and that should tell me if it is working or not?

Likely it does, some people just aren't very observant.
