Playing around with My '02 RS125

Had eff all to do today, so decided to pull my RS125 apart and degrease, polish, clean, lube etc everything possible as per the manual. Found a few screws/bolts for the faring and seat were missing, so have ordered some new ones. This is a sweet bike to work on, everything seems pritty straight forward. Feeling much more confident of taking her for a longer ride and being able to investigate issues if/when they happen on the ride of the road.

Decided to also have a look at the spark plug, at first glance it looked ok, came out wet enough, but not soaking and looked ok, was a sort of mud brown colour. Sent a few photos around to some mates and they all reckoned it looked ok as well.
Then one of my mates noticed it was a BR8 Spark Plug, umm WTF does this mean I wonder... further checking seems as though this plug is for the restricted RS125.... more research... thanks PSB Search Function . Found that bike is defiantly the derestricted version (however question mark over the CDI Restriction?) Was this also done on Aussie Delivered Bikes?.

Anyway back on topic, went and changed to plug to a BR9EXI... Holy Sh*tballs, what a difference it made, no choke needed for start-up, no throttle blipping to get it to keep idling. Sets straight into a idle at around 1500rpm.. Not missing a beat.
Left the bike to warm up and took it for a quick lap around the block, perfect, launches off the lights way better and seems to enjoy the higher end of the RPM range a little more as well.

Let it cool down when I got home and pulled out the spark plug again, nice bit of oil coating, but not drenched in it, so I reckon it’s probably running a near perfect mix if not just slighly rich.
Anyone got any ideas as to why the bike didn’t like the BR8 plug so much?

Also I noticed that I had a little bit of oil on my front, left hand fork, which i don't remember being there when I brought the bike last week. Cleaned it off before the ride, and doesn’t appear to have leaked during the ride, fork is currently clean, going to leave it overnight to see if any leaks happen. Is there a gasket here that could potentially need replacing or could it be something more sinister?

Leaking will most likely be the fork seals. Relatively cheap part, Russ from dynotime (shameless plug, the bloke does great work) did mine while doing other things so i can't comment on that side. Keep an eye on it, bounce the front end, i she leaks fix it

Top ends already done ai? Got an aftermarket airfilter on it?

I'll get back to you about the zorst, there's a receipt somewhere

Thanks will give that a crack in the morning and see how it goes. Otherwise I'll give dynotime a go.

Yeah Top End Done, running sweet. No idea about the airfilter, its the only thing i didn't check today, I'll have a look tomorrow. Whats the advantage of aftermarker airfilter on a stock RS?

Yeah let us know about the zorst!

    And so it begins.

The 8 is the wrong heat range, once the powervalve opens the engine is able to breathe better, introducing more cold air to the combustion chamber. This means you need a different (colder) plug to operate in these cooler conditions.

Does the CDI have any holes drilled in it? Standard they are designed to meet emissions standards, drill that hole though and you lose the power dip at around 5000rpm.

    Enjoy

hahaha, yeah didn't take long.. these bikes just ask you to take them apart .. , forgot to call you back to day, will give you a buzz tomorrow

Took apart the rear of the bike, definatly has had no holes drilled into the silcon part of the CDI, so i'm assuming this means the CDI Restriction is still present. i'll talk to you tomorrow about this. Cheers.

I've now got a BR8, Spare BR9 and a BR10 stitting in my tool kit in the tail end, so i'lll have plenty of things to try if/when I break down

Leave the 10 until after you've done the exhaust, the 9 is correct for a stock bike.
