i assume you want to use the bike as a daily. imho a good learner bike, is something you can ride daily- lots of practice makes good riders. lots of spannering makes for good mechanics.
a vj22 is circa 1990, 21 years old how many km do you think the average bike has done? if its low km its probably cos it sat in a shed for 15 years after it blew up, until someone could be bothered to fix it.
the engines want a new set of pistons every 10,000km, a new crank say every 40,000km. a lot of them have blown up cos the powervalve pins have chopped out and dropped into the running motor, so i figure those need to be replaced every 40,000km.
because its a 2T, they blow up when they arent tuned properly. i learnt how to tune strokes by blowing them up. it was expensive, i didnt do much riding and i did lots of spannering.
because they are old they blow up cos the components are worn out. because the bores are nikasil they cannot simply be rebored for an oversize piston.
if you buy one, the first thing you should probably do is tear it down and rebuild it. its heaps cheaper and easier to replace worn components before they fail in a running motor. do you want to buy a bike you can jump on and ride? or a project?
a moneypit perhaps?
