Got home a bit early last night, changed the gearbox oil... correct amount came out so I am happy that the crank seals are most likely ok.
Started her up... didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, but she didn't sound spot on and was idling a little lower than normal. Didn't hear it running on 1 pot, no misfires or backfiring, and I had just put in a pipercross filter which make the motor sound louder. I am running a kr1 cdi which I am told is compatible but I had some doubts. After a quick run around the block something was up. Got her home, wouldn't idle.
Took her into the workshop, checked compression. 25psi on the right cylinder. Whipped the pipes off and saw some crown damage. Rings ok and intact, some light marks on the piston wall. I will know more when I pull the barrels, providing the bores are ok I will do the top end.
Not sure on the cause, it would not have been from my quick run looking at the piston through the exhaust port.
Glad I picked her up cheap and factored in a top end rebuild when I bought her. Time for the 300cc conversion? I'll seriously consider it if the bores are damaged... as they would need to be sent away to be replated anyway.
For now she's going in the corner, I am starting to plan the restoration of the white rgv which is going to be my next project.

i have been pricing up bits... looks like I should be able to get a crank and refurbed barrels from somewhere like BDK for around 500 GBP. so shouldn't be too bad.

lean, i don't think so, it looks more washed than lean. The cause will be the thrust washer which has killed the cylinder and it's been running like that for a while I suspect. I've got some leads on getting it all repaired, a lot easier than I thought it was going to be. Just a case of time and money. I'll sort it next year after i've restored the other rgv.
