    she's a smoker

    Hi all,

I recently purchased an old 2 banger (APRILIA RS250 1999)
She had inches of dust and lots of spiders when i picked her up.
I have spent a few hours on her over the last 2 weeks trying to see what is missing and what needs replacing.
Lots of bolts and fairing clips missing and also the main fairing spacers missing.
Pro Bolt Australia has been great with most of the parts for this but still no joy with the fairing spacers. (a point in the right direction would be appreciated).
I got her started on Sunday as i spend most of Saturday changing out hoses and blowing the cob webs out.
Boy, she sounded nice, but a fair amount of smoke was pouring out the exhaust pipes (to be expected after such a long time sat?).
    What next???
She needs a new rear tire and a good service (probably a new gasket kit)
Anyone got any good recommendations for a good place? (I am close to Osb Park or Wangara)

I will put some pictures up in the next week or so once i get some time.

Any parts or advice will be appreciated.

Not sure if it'll help much but I bought alot of parts from pjme.co.uk

if local dealers don't carry parts for an old rs250 you could buy them from the site and provide the parts which would be cheaper & probably make their job easier

    fairing spacers?
if thats the ones on the sides that have a slip pin, bout where your knee is, they are available from rick gill, bout 20 bucks a side...... :O
they smoke a bit til cleared... eh its ok
check your powervalve adjustment, with the grey wire method, aswell as fresh coolant bled up via the use of the bleedpoints aswell as lifting the front tyre near vertical which will get that last bubble.
May aswell put a new air filter in, as they turn to powder.
Good luck with it, and if you want pimp bits check out sean at The Tuning Works

    Thanks DT,
I will have a look and see what i can get.
Parts in WA are so difficult to source.
UK and Europe seem to be much easier and better on price.

    Thanks Gangus,
    That's the ones.
I will take a look later this week at Rick's place.
I will check the PV and maybe give the area a clean.
Some fresh fuel and new coolant is a good idea.
Air filter looks and feels brand new anyway but i will get a spare for the box.

    Hi Guy's,

    A couple of pic's.
I will get a few more over the weekend when i clear the garage to do some work on her.

I got her started and up to temp last night.
Just before i shut her down i noticed some black oil leaking out the mufflers but the smoke got better.
Maybe she had some oil in the cyl due to standing for a long time???

The black oil from the endcans is normal on a two stroke
Just needs a good run in the hills to make it happy,

It is total normal, my RZ smokes a little till it is warm then you wouldn't even know it is a 2-stroke...except that lovely sound as you pull through 6g. Warm it up and take it for a spin around the bloke a couple times and it will just get better and better!!

    Thanks mcmurray,

I have a morning with RAC on Tuesday out at the Airport, so i will drop in there after that and take a look.
I was in touch with the guy's there last week and they seemed to be very helpful over the phone.
Apparently they have a designated corner for each make of bike.
Come on in and rummage through, see what you can find was what i got.
    Looking forward to it.

Gangus took me on a great ride in the hills, will have to see if he is willing to organize another one,

    Hi all,

I hit up motorcycle masters on Tuesday for some parts.
they all seem to be a nice bunch of guy's in there.
I picked up some carbon cans and tried to get an exhaust hanger but i can't seem to get it to fit correctly (maybe it is bent).
Also picked up a rear tail light as my old one was knackered.
Noticed i need a new rear micro switch for the brake light, so i got one on order from RG's.
Still waiting on a list of minor bits i ordered a few weeks back from RG's place (no idea when they will be with me)
Next up will be a service and rear tire.
ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR A SERVICE? (good reputable shop but fair pricing)
After that i will book her in so i can get a set of plates and get sweaty palms about taking her out for a ride.

    Thanks for that 180,
I will give them a call and see what they can do.

I would like to get some pod filters for the bike as getting the air box on after taking it off each time is a nightmare.
    Anyone got any suggestions?
I have tried some of the local K&N dealers but i am still waiting (3 days later) for them to get back to me.
Something a little easier would be what i am after.

    Nice one Gangus,

Any pointers on how to get the air box on?
I can't get the bottom cowling on to the lower carb.
I got it on first time i did it but since then i have spent hours trying everything i can without a hammer and i still cant get the lower one on.
I can only get my hand in so far as i am sure you know, there is so much in the way.
The only other way i can think of is to remove or move the sub frame out so i can get in there.
But i don't want to be doing that every time.
