I wonder why they have put V8 on the side of the motor when it's a square 8?

I was under the impression that a 'square' motor had the both rows of pistons moving parallel to each other???

Valid point, I always construed a square motor to have 2 cranks, but I suppose it is in a V configuration.

Works both ways i think. Just trolled about an it seems that a square engine, cam be reffered to as a u-engine, and that shape would suggest parallel cylinders, although the actuall definition does appear to be a twin crank engine, with two straight cylinder banks.

I'm pretty sure that the only time an engine is referred to as being square, is when the stroke of the engine is equal to the bore.

I think the rz500 was the only gp bike running twin cranks??? Pretty sure hondas nsr was a pure V4

aah forgot the nsr you would be correct that it is pure v4 but after a quick bit of phone googling it looks like the honda is actually the exception and was the only gp 500 running a single crank at that time.

Yes, you can use square (and over square/under square) to indicate the ratio of bore:stroke.
A square engine also denotes parallel cylinders on two axis, a'la the Square 4 or YZR500.
