    TZR250 - 3MA - some opinions or comments please...

Hi All - Just finished my 31K restoration, and I'm looking for something new to get stuck into. I have an opportunity to buy a reasonable 3MA here for ZAR3K (about AUS$450). It's all there, but the crank has gone, and I see from my access to Yamaha parts that you ain't going to get another one anytime soon... I guess then a full restoration is out, but is it still worth taking and trying to make a plan? I don't know the 3MA, so any comments will help - was it a good road bike, was it a bit of a pig, did it handle ok etc, etc. What about shoehorning my second 31K engine into the 3MA running gear? Just throwing it out there

the rz 500 used the 3ma rear pots...so maybe a 500 top crank will offer some parts, www.rz500.com

hey mate i have owned 2 of them.... thats right i was a sucker for the looks twice....there are bacially 2 bikes...a japanese one..great bike bad engine...a shame really..u can get them to go well..but with lots of messin about... restrictions in pipes, cdi, carbs, speedo...and most of them have a tamper proof effect ie remove one and it makes something else run poor. i mannaged to get 58hpr from my jap one..but about 3 seizures and countless dyno work new pipes skimmed head,,blah blah..and it still was shit to ride.....u have to ask your self what do u want from a bike... get on and go? or get on and mess about for the next 12 months..or one that have been sold in a country by yamaha..ie newzealand.. these are better still a pain..still restricted imagine my sorrow as a stock cbr250 is pulling convincingly away from me out of the last corner at eastern creek race way...this one i never tried to mess with to get more performance..
neithert of the ones i had went as good as the previous tzr2ma... or suzuki rgv..also u have very few pple who actually know anything about it..parts and stuff are hard with any old bike but something like this is again..that much harder...
old 2 strokes can be enought work on their own with out adding the extra hassels of stupid power restrictions on them
    but on the plus side...
they are an awsome handling bike..what it lacked in power made up for it in handling better then the rgv..
they sound awsome. and very well built
if i had kept mine and new what i new now..id put a rz350 engine in it and be done with it..unless it was part of a collection

Thanks all - yup - this one will be a Jap import, although I'm pretty sure by now it would have been derestricted - we Saffers are famous for that! You know - I'm not a racer, and will never be - I just thought it might be a fun thing to mess around with - I have the 31K as my chilled bike, as well as a TMAX scooter for commuting, so it would basically be just a toy to keep me busy!
It also won't be a simple thing doing the engine swap - I only have the 31K bottom end, so I will have to buy Banshee barrels, reverse them, and then go from there...

Twinrock makes some valid points and you can't beat advice from someone whos owned one (let alone two). Despite the issues around making them quick and to back twinrock up from what I've read they were hardly a robust engine in STD tune let alone modified, but my god I reckon they are in the top 10 of the most gorgeous bikes of the last 30 yrs and for that one reason alone I want one (but only in the red/white colours).

For the money I'd buy it and source a complete engine from japan, keep it STD and enjoy spending hours each week basking in it's inherent beauty......

Hmmmm.... Wonder where I can get my hands on one.... 4 bikes is not too many is it?

Replacing the CDI with a Ignitech or Zeeltronic will solve all the drama's easy peasy japanesy. This blokes(louis from the tzr forum) bike still needs decent pipes but it has just on 60HP at the wheel.

the next video is a bit better, note the humps in the road

That's the one! Red and White, in all it's glory! I'm looking at it on Friday - if it's not worth it, I'll gladly put it in a box and ship it over...... anyone interested?
