Dude, seriously listen to these people. Don't go an RS250 for your 1st bike. I was talked out of it and I'm glad. Your lying through your teeth if you say you wont go fast on one. These things are license loosing material. It WILL NOT let you ride it slowly.
The RS250 and its sister bike the RGV250 earned the name "Kid Killers" for a reason. The amount of times i have heard the story "I bought an RGV for my 1st bike n smashed it 3 days later" is honestly unbelievable!
I went from a GPX250, to an RS125, to my now current RGV250.
I wouldn't have done it any other way. And for a well looked after RS250, id expect to pay upwards of $7.5G.
Go a ZX2C if you can find one. It will be more than enough to keep you entertained whilst you learn. You get your license, and you still have a shit load to learn for the next 6 months.
In the end its your call. But i strongly advise against getting an RS250 for your 1st bike. The RS125 kept me entertained for 2 years, and i wanted to keep it till i croaked! Unfortunately it was written off a few months ago.

Its just how you said it Micheal. no one wants to right of there bike. it just happens, no matter well you know you bike it can still happen, you dont even need to be fanging it around the streets.
i wanted a rs250 for my first bike aswell but being a 2 stoke i kinda let people talk me out of it which im glad because they are dangours.
there is plenty of time to get one once you have out riden your 4 stroke.
trust the majority they know best, isnt that why you asked?

the reason i ask was to get an idea of the price, to is if it was a viable option for me. I understand the risk involve with a 2-stroker; thats why i haven't limited myself to just looking at RS250.
I do appreciate everyone opinion, and i am taking them on board. If it comes across as im being stubborn, sorry just i have heard this all before (when i 1st got my car); so i do understand the risk and not just going it be alright i wont kill myself cuz it cant be that hard to ride.
anyways by the looks of things they are alittle out of my price range, so you all can stop worrying now

well the bike has a set of arrow pipes (cost more than 1K). should sound wicked unlike stock rgv which sounds like a 6hp outboard at idle.
$6K seam pretty good IMO. Just need to check on how many kms this guy thinks is low. the resident rgv gurus will tell you how long until you need to do major work.

What they said, basically.
I'll add this:
If you don't know how to ride a bike yet, you will just as likely be SLOWER on the RGV or RS250 than you will on a 4 stroke. Ridden well, they're quick.
Ridden like a noob, without the confidence to abuse clutch and keep them in the power band, they're not. They're difficult to launch, and have no power below 7000 rpm.
Sure you could learn on one, but don't be buying one thinking "awww yeah, i'm gonna smoke all them other 250 noobs!" because if you're inexperienced, that might not be the case
They're not *quite* a race bike with lights (the race spec ones have about double the power - yes, 90-100hp out of a 250), but the power DELIVERY is very race-oriented and not exactly road/noob friendly.

mate if you want a 2 stroke then get one and learn to ride it they do ride different, then try going back to a diesel . as thro said you will probably be slower on it anyway, the maintanence thing is crap, you thrash the tits off it all the time you will be rebuilding it often, ride it properly and it will last many ks ....theres riding and theres thrashing

fuck the haters.
i learnt on an rgv. my fiance learnt on an rgv. the key is common sense.
the price range has already been answered which is about right. I'd pay between 5000 and 7500 for a good one in the current market.

Well I kept quiet just not to be shot down, but Go the RS 250 Prilla, one you will not likely to trade in and therefore do not loose coin on!
And if you are a little bit naturaly gifted you will trash the diesel brigade in all departments except fuel economy, But who cares you do not have to sit on a terrace with your "Fruity Friends sippin latee's at $5 a lipwettener!
You'll be smoking them while wheelieing past the cafee! Holleee.
My "learnerbike" was a 750cc 3 cil 2 stroke with a drummy in the front spokes!

just looked at that autotrader ad. The paint scheme is not original so if you have a look make sure you check it thoroughly.

every penny i would expect, some mates of mine had a L and M model RGV, awesome, but they never kept up the maintenance, sacrilige, one had a too tight chain and snapped a engine mount!! and the other eventually died due to a car's A pillar :-)

They're pretty worthless, being italian AND 2 stroke.
I'll kindly take it off your hands
