    Best Way to Bleed Brakes

Picked this up from eBay in the UK. It's a pressure bleeder and falls into the "why didn't I think of that" category.

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG]

It comes with four different size caps for common master cylinders. They don't fit most bikes so you make your own. You can drill a 10mm hole in your original and put a plug in it or get hold of an old cap. I got an old cap from Clutterbuck Speedworkz. They have a range of old caps for $6.50 each or $16.99 for two.

    Procedure:
    1. Suck out fluid from master cylinder with a syringe or siphon out.
    2. Fill master cylinder with new clean fluid.
    3. Let down one of your tyres to 20psi or use a car tyre or whatever.
    4. Fill pressure bleeder container about 60% to 75% full.
    5. Screw cap tighly onto master cylinder.
    6. Connect pressure hose to tyre valve.
    7. Connect bleed hose to each bleeder and bleed off fluid in the normal way into a container until new fluid comes through and no air bubbles are present.
    8. Release pressure and remove the modified master cylinder cap.
    9. Check fluid level and fit normal cap.

I've done my Vito Van and the bike. Many of the modern ABS equipped vehicles advise that pressure bleeding like this is the only way to do it properly.

    It cost about $45 delivered.

Looks pretty cool but I prefer the old school squeeze, twist anticlockwise, squeeze more, twist clockwise, release, top up method.

We used to have a big one when I did my apprenticeship. They were for tractors thought. I had a look around for them everywhere and was never able to find them. Thanks Scott! I will order one...

The issue with the speedbleeder and the old school method is they don't work with ABS and some systems if you start with dry brakes - like when you add braided lines. Sometimes you need a vacuum or pressure bleed system. The one Scott has is clever design and cheap.

While I dont have ABS on my bike I have just installed new braided lines and had no problems doing it the old way or when I swapped to speed bleeders.

It probably depends on the brake set up, but with a dry system on an F4i and 600rr I couldn't get the system to start filling, even leaving it for a day. Using a vacuum system made it almost instant.

The one Scott posted looks even better.

Price is good, several years ago, I made my own pressure bleeder...
Screw top reservoir formed a good seal, but the rectangular plate reservoir I found difficult sometimes.
How does this kit handle them?

Also what pressure do they recommend you use?

The kit comes with four circular caps that fit most car master cylinders. For the rectangular caps either get an old cap or make a rectangular plate from alloy, make a rubber washer and drill a 10mm hole for the hose fitting.

    Pressure? 20psi as previously stated.

    3. Let down one of your tyres to 20psi or use a car tyre or whatever.

Good one Tim ... works a treat on your car or van.

The front brakes on my Honda have never felt better after the pressure bleed.

Main reason was because I wanted to use it for the car as well, and it can be used above pressures of 29psi......

I was just wondering approximately how many mL does it take to completely flush out your brakes? I did mine the other day but the old fluid and new fluid were the same colour so I "emptied" out the master cylinder approximately 5 times.

By master cylinder, I assume you mean brake fluid reservoir?

You may as well use 500mL, as that is the standard brake fluid container size, and for the majority of users, the 18 months that would see you possibly requiring it again would allow major deteriation/water ingress into any fluid left over in the container, and not be good to introduce into your brake system.
