My silver backs went to white in about 12-18 months but by the end the denim was so thin they disintergrated. Wasnt overly impressed. Wonder if i can get a free pair as my current pair is getting awefully faded

Dye-ing denim sounds relatively easy - we tried to dye a second hand Joe Rocket jacket (cordura-nylon-polyester) with black dye (it was originally blue/white/black) - virtually impossible even though my wife knew all the tricks that are supposed to work with synthetics (like double the dye strength, hot water, vinegar etc). The material is too waterproof and tough for normal fabric dye. In the end I just used 3M Vinyl Paint (SupaCheap only have 'black') - jacket was 'hard' when the paint dried -thought it was stuffed - but after wearing it and a gentle machine wash it's flexible agian. VHT do an excellent Vinyl paint (I've used it on a gearsack) , but the label specifically says not to use it on fabric.

My Draggin jeans have faded on the thighs, knees etc and started to fray on the legs as well but they are a little long for general wear (to combat riding up when on the bike) so to be expected, also they are 6 years old now and I've been down the road twice so no complaints apart from where they wore through just below the knee Kevlar

there is a very good product available from spotlight called i-dye which is about $12, but would do a great job of dying your kevlars if thats what your after. The trick is getting the right dye for the right material

One thing I learned from a mate, admittedly a metro but still good advice though, wash them in salt when you get them, it apparently fixes the colour better and the denim does not fade as quickly.
Somehow it's reassuring knowing that I'm not the only one pretending to be normal.

I am an textile artist and use this dye extensively, trick is to use a cup of salt in the first wash to set the colour as new products have a coating on them, do you ever notice your new jeans soften up after its first wash?

The salt sets the loud in the fibers,

To refresh my black jeans I use double quantities of dye in a plastic basin I soak in dye mix for 24+ hours and stir the mix every time I pass the sink, then after 24 hours I throw in front load washing machine with nothing in except cold water hang under cover or put in dryer then just run cycle in washer with a scoop of detergent, if anyone wants me to do their pant I am happy to do it for them if they purchase the dye

Best dye I have used for dying black jeans or dragging is RIT brand in the shade black/aczabache from woolies or Coles

It's jet black and very little residue washing out in next wash, but I also use a dye setter when I dye fabrics for my sewing, I love working with dry salt to give batik or aged affects on fabrics

There is no kevlar in the bottom of the legs - only the parts with the yellow inserts are kevlar, hence they are purely cotton around the end.
