    Giant pushbike ...

    HELP ....

My sons Giant mountain bike has shit the crank bearings. I have stripped it only to find that the left hand outer bearing race is seized to the frame. It is one of those cartridge type bearing assemblies and I need to remove the race to be able to fix the bike. The bike shop has said this is not the first time this has happened and suggested heating the frame but this often leads to the frame cracking. I can destroy the offending part as the new assembly includes it, but I need something like a small recipro saw to cut the housing up and attempt to break it up?

Do any of you wise souls have any ideas as to how I can sort this without throwing the entire thing in the bin.

PS, I forgot to mention that it is threaded into the frame

Is it a Euro bottom bracket? If so, do you have the proper tool (similar to below), I'm pretty sure one side is left-handed thread.

You'll get the idea how it works from:
    shimano cartridge - Google Search

i think agird has it covered.

the drive side should be left hand threaded..so check you aren't actually tightening it!

if you need to borrow the bottom bracket tool as shown above flick me a PM. i bought one not that long ago.

Above posts are correct. It is a left hand thread. Both sides unscrew with the top of the race rotating down towards the back of the bike. I have an array of bike tools if needed and your anywhere near rockingham

I really don't understand euro BBs. What's wrong with just pressing the BB on?

Yes, that is the spanner but I have already destroyed the mating ring on the race. I have cut a slot in the race with a 4inch grinder and have been hitting it with a drift and gympie.

This is good advise, as I had assumed, LH side, RH thread but your explanation corrects my assumption. I will give it a belt the other way on the weekend.

You can get freeze spray from most big hardware stores and maybe repco or somewhere similar. (ring and ask).

It either works by 'freezing' the parts causing them to shrink enough to release the seized parts or at least help. Or freezing what ever is holding them together , rust, loctite and making it brittle enough to break when you try to crack the nut.
