    How To: Fit The Skinniest Front Tyre (As Safely as Possible)

    Hey Guys,

    I'm running a thick rear tyre (Firestone 450-18) and I'm about to buy a front tyre that I want to be as skinny as possible.

    I've had my eye on Avon Speedmasters for a while. I want 300-19, but I'm evaluating whether or not 3.25 19 would be safer and more balanced. The reason is that a super thick rear vs a super skinny front sounds sketchy. Then again, choppers, harleys, bobbers etc do this all the time (600+ rears etc).

    What's the ideal ratio for front tyre vs rear tyre?

    To answer you question:

    The best/ideal ratio of front to rear tyre is likely what the manufacturer fitted. They don't have engineers designing this stuff for shits and giggles.


    If you're going for massive rear and skinny front.... good luck with that. Going wider on the rear WILL affect handling, how far you go will determine by how much it has an effect.


    Choppers, harleys, etc do it all the time yes - but safety and handling isn't the reason they do it.

    so you are talking imperial sizes here. I would try to keep a standard size front tyre on the bike, it is designed that way to steer properly.
