How to make a kero bin .....

Hey all , while im in a posting mood , and in a drunk one , ill post up some pix i took yeterday after a few requests on how i clean my chain often .... and make it a low hassle excersise . Kero bin.

Its a small bucket or container that has water and kero in it , principal being that the kero is lighter and the water is a one way trap for the kero to keep it clean. For eg , if your washing somethign sandy and oily , the sand falls past the kero , and into the water , where you dont wash anyways , making it a sand free kero bin. Same with many other particles, and dirt in the actual kero too . If you leae it sit , it will form on the water layer , you can syphon the kero out .... toss the water and filthy kero dregs , and refil with your old , now re-cycled kero with fresh water. Anyways , here's how it works .

You need : A bin (about 4L in size?) , a separator that will keep above your water levels so you can lean parts on it your washing , and kero / water.
Click

I burnt holes in the separator (dont knwo what it is , i bought it form Bunnings) so the air escapes and water falls down.
Click

Fill the bin with water about 3/4 the way up the separator.
Click

Add the kerosine , and it will straight away separate from the water.
Click

Done , your ready to clean that infested chain !!! , the best part is that it becomes very recyclable and keeps clean while you wash things down instead of washing things with filthy sandy kero.
Click

-------------------
Cleaning the bin

To get long life out of the kero, simply let the kero sit for a day or so , and all of the crap in the kero itself will fall to the water layer. At this time without disturbing it, gently syphon with a small hose or better clear PVC line (the airlines they use for aquariums work great) and let its drain to a few mm off the bottom of the kero level. You can do the same with a old glass or a small plastic container.

You then pour out the dirty water and kero , clean the bin out with water , add new water , and refill with the kero you syhoned . If you leave that kero sit again , you can catch the sedament a second time . The other night i did mine , i went from cofee coloured kero to a mint green looking kero by syhoning it out twice.

Enjoy.

Wow, that's kind of amazing - like watching Julius Sumner-Miller on the ABC back in the 60's (except in colour)
I can't think what more you could possibly need to know... except maybe this:

Great tip Saf.

How do you actually clean your chain?

Do you break it and remove it completely, or just remove the rear wheel, leaving it on the front sprocket with enough to hang down into the container?

Also, does the kero tend to wash out the grease from behind the O/X rings, or it wouldn't get past?

Frank, I forgot to add the line about re-using the kero , i just did , and yes while its $1.60 per L (i think its cheaper at servos - i dunno , i just buy it) you can re-use it for a long time.

CB, I usually wash it on the bike. When i get a new chain , i fit it, check it , cut the length, then clean it in kero. That white wax they supply chains with, is there for anti-rust properties , and its also inside the rollers. However from the outside it melts , and flings onto your undertail, lic plate, rego disk, muffler (if you have a twin) and so on. One its cleaned with kero and toothbrush, i spray it down with water , dry it off with a heat gun spinning the rear wheel (using a rear stand) and this also heats the chain up. Spray on the Maxima chain wax .... when it dries as the chain cools, it solidifies and your done.

(if you have a twin)
Got a 4 cil and a 3 cil (2smokes) with underseat exhaust(s) and both get splattered with grease!and all sorts sa muck + frikkin hot!
undertail heaters (Exhausts) were the rage in 1984/5 and then they saw the light and hung them where they belong; on the bottom
Exelent tip this separator.
I use a parts washer,(Old typwritter cleaner!) but they take up a lotta room.

Just one question regarding the plastics used....

I know from doing some of my model building that some plastics would melt from the fumes off the turp's that was being used to clean the brushes (For instance, if you stored the turps inside a jam jar that had a plastic lid, the lid would melt and deform from the fumes eating it).

Does the same thing happen with kero, or is it pretty neutral on plastics?

Just wondering if there is anything to keep an eye out for if anyone goes to pick up the tub and stuff from Bunnings, wouldnt want to come back a couple days later to see it melted and kero all over the place!
Nitrous is like a hot girl with STD's, you know you wanna hit it, but you are afraid of the consequences!

Good Q mate.

Nah its pretty neutrual , in this pic you can see where the bottom of the white platic is , the ripples ? , thats the buckle on the plastic container , after about 12 months. No hass. Rather than melt, i think (and im basing this on what ive seen happen to plastics at our workshop with kero) it removes the oil from the plastic iself , as it goes over time harder and more brittle , but this takes years. Ice cream buckets work fine too ... they warp a but and thats it .

Wow, great tip!

Noob question though

So obviously since you're washing the chain on the bike, the bin needs to be able to fit under the chain whilst you are scrubbing to collect the run off to seperate?

Or are you just dipping the toothbrush into the kero bin and letting all the dirty waste onto the ground?whilst keeping the kero seperate?

I have a old PC top off a case .... its about 500mm x 200mm x 10mm with siliconed edges so it can hold say a cupful of water . That goes unter the chain , and the kero bin goes under the rear sprocket , as its drips off the most there. I never let it run to the ground .... i know im a little person, compared to fuckups that say Union Carbide has done to pollute our world , but i hate dripping kero/oils onto the ground/soil.

I use a rear stand while doing this ..... best way .

By ground I meant newspaper lined floor to allow for proper disposal once cleaning is completed

edit: do you then pour the stuff that collected under your chain back into the bin for seperation?

Do you think a wire mesh strainer work better than the plastic seperater? The wife uses a rectangular one that looks like it'd be perfect for the job. Have you used this similar process to clean air filters as well?

You could even get flash and maybe put in a few plastic valves (the type used in drip irrigation systems) into the side to make the draining process easier?

regards
Ryan

Ryan, Funny you say , thats exactly what i did . Practising 3 times a week, sometimes on 2 different bikes made for shitloads of sandy filters. On the filter one i used the side of a shopping trolley ..... BIG holes, bent up into a separator. Its your call ... the plastic now does a great job, when i re-packed some bearings last week , i just dump em all on the plastic , let em soak and one after another clean em up.

LMAO ! ... i wouldnt go so far RJ !! haha but thanks anyways.

i must be using the wrong type of container cause im on to my 2nd kero bin cause the plastic warps and i cant put the lid back on... thinkin that the heat has done this from leaving it out side, but its just gone and done the same with this one..

going for heavy duty next time... but i cant seem to find one that will also fit under my bike.. gonna have to make some sort of contraption.

Just a question:

If you've got one of these, and all the metallic/metal coloured crap from your chain stays suspended in the turps - does it need cleaning, or is the turps causing this?

You know the metal colour that grease off a new chain goes?
