I didn't realise lockwiring was such an art-form until I read your tutorial. I ended up browsing through http://rgl.faa.gov/REGULATORY_AND_GU...apter%2007.pdf which takes it to another level.

Nice bit of research there agrid. Very similar to some of the text books we used to use during trade training.

The torque setting are very handy though, I've kept this for future reference.

    Cheers man.

I was wondering if drilling two holes weakened the head so had a look for that FAA document. Unless I missed it they seem to only drill one hole and kind of wrap the safety wire around so that there is clockwise tension.

Usually Aircraft grade hardware comes predrilled and it meets the specs,Bolts are predrilled according to manufacturers specs for where they are used,Motorcycles are extremely easy to lockwire ,you should try some of the areas on the Hawk 127 ,Pommie planes are a bit like Pommie cars not much fun to work on

    Hey John, nice tutorial. Thanks!

Quick question though, when lockwiring parts of the bike which would be the best gauge wire to use? Also, where would one purchase this wire? My search has extended as far as eBay, Bunnings and the odd tool shop but to no avail.

    Cheers,
    Alex

    I too am a framie/engine fitter and worked on fa18's tornado's and pc9's.

John is correct about the figure of 8 lead in. it usually causes a stress raiser on one of the wires leaving the bolt head. when I was doing independant inspections I would refuse lockwiring done that way.

Hey John, were you ever in Dhahran?
Chuck Norris built my motorcycle, it runs off the tears of small children and makes 10,000 Hp, he calls it his "street version".

    Hey Mongrel,

Cheers for that mate. It's funny as we have been discussing this at work of late and most people have echoed what you said.

And yep, sure was in Dhahran, from 1998 til 2004.

    John
