CVs on the old Subarus are an absolute PIG of a job, and in some cases require the drive shaft to be replaced (hence Subaru use to sell the outer CV already attached to the drive shaft as a genuine part) as it's sometimes not possible to remove the CV.

    Have fun

Don't be scared... It's a piece of piss... Worked on Subies for years and they are simple as...

Prefer to do one of them over doing my Pajero that I need to do tomorrow!!

Just need to make sure you have a big enough socket to undo the axle nut. The rest is straight forward...

most CV's are supplied with both CV's and shaft now, call "Outta Control" in Myaree and they should be able to point you in the right direction.

Give Outer Control a call. We used to use this mob as a subcontractor. Sometimes their price supplied and fitted is cheaper than you can get the parts for by themselves.

The CV's are it is pretty easy compared to others all roll pins and cir-clips no presses etc required. If you are really strapped for cash and because subies have equal length half shafts you can swap them left to right so you start driving on the other side of the CV joint.

i've seen this done and also 2nd hand CV's from wreckers that weren't marked as coming from left or right side, they tend to last 3 months maximum and when they let go it can be close to catastrophic in place of the normal clicking and clunking.
Do you remember the good old days before the internet?

It doesn't. But it makes him feel better for a while.

I've done a few early subaru cv's before. In most cases i've found it easier to undo the engine mounts and jack up the engine enough to be able to pull the drive shaft off the diff spline first and leave it all attached at the wheel end. Then you can just pull back the boots and remove the clip to pull the shaft apart. You can reverse the cage that holds the ball bearings and apply lots of grease and it normally quietens things down for quite a while.

Front or rear or both? From memory they're all the same, if you don't need 4WD, pick your best two and stick 'em in the front.
