    Teaching partners to ride

    Hey Guys,

My partner got her license about a year and a half ago but hasn't ridden since... she kept begging me to take her out for practice... so we went out today... got her to practice letting clutch in and out... and doing big loops around a car park... going all well untill the end as she came in to park up she was turning and slammed the front break on... went over the side... i think i was more worried than she was about it all, but i dont know how i will go about teaching her the basics again...

any1 got any good pointers that i should tell her next time we go out???

    Thanks

Don't, I'd suggest that she go back through an Instructor, wouldn't have thought she's be back to complete noob status after getting her licence, why did she never ride?

There are a few threads on this subject with some insightful replies.

    Found one of them

Take her to a quiet spot somewhere with no cars around. Start by teaching her to take off and stop, then shifting up and down gears, then turning and emergency braking.

After all that, go home and make love to her.

PS. I hope she sucked your dick for a long time after she binned your shit.

Some people are teachers, some people are not.

Every time a thread like this comes up, I almost always come to the same conclusion. If you have to ask the question about teaching, your partner or anybody else, you probably shouldn't.

This is true, however sometimes the student can be the problem too.

At work I generally find it harder to motivate subordinates that I socialise with outside of work, than guys I haven't known as long. It can often be difficult to break down the barrier between mate and boss, or in this case partner and instructor.

A student can only be taught as much as they are willing to learn... and often they will choose who they want to learn from.

Give her another go, but your best bet is to go with a third party instructor. Leave the problem with them!

Props for trying though. I gave my missus a few lessons. Was rewarding watching her pick it up. Just a shame she hasn't yet got the motivation to go get her licence.

@ Stoney - she didn't ride cause she's using my bike nd now I got a new bike on the way she is now getting into my bike as she knows it will be hers soon... So its just lost hera bit over the last 2 years...

Other than that, I don't think I'm teacher material so will invest in third party instructor but maybe with her using the hyo as its bigger nd different shape to instructor bikes...

Thanks for the comments though guys...

Recipe for disaster. Any criticism will degenerate into an argument, and if you don't criticise, she won't learn.

This is the reason teaching siblings, partners, friends and family doesn't work.

i've taught my wife to ride as well as many close friends and my brother but the ground rules were in place before i started...

"if you risk your safety or mine then you can expect a bollocking"

if you're going to get upset about your bike getting dropped, that is your problem and the risk you take not theirs.

if you're scared of damage or rough treatment or slipped clutch and grinding gears on your pride and joy then you shouldn't be letting a learner or returning rider loose on it, if you don't have a suitable bike, the patience to explain things from different approaches/angles rather than just repeating yourself you shouldn't be doing it.

your learner deserves the same learning experience anyone else gets, patience and clear instructions.

i ended up sending my wife and brother to the local motorcycle school once they had passed the level i had the patience/skills to teach to, slow speed handling is my strong point i can spend all day playing walking pace motorkhana, lane discipline and country roadcraft are close behind and the motorcycle school know that if someone comes from me they can already ride safely they just need to learn the test routine, i don't have the patience for the slow laps of town required to learn it if i'm not being paid

I wouldnt of taught that you would be able to get that rusty if you've gotten up to the standard of passing your test, regardless of time passed. Its all in the muscle memory

the standard of passing a test is barely above training wheels, it takes the next year or two of fairly regular riding to build the muscle memory required to just jump back on a bike and expect to not need time to adapt.

The longer you have been riding, the more likely you are to overlook the basics which are locked into your subconcious and you rarely think about.

By all means shadow and pass on your pearls of wisdom but leave it to professional Instructors in the first instance.

Saving a few dollars on tuition means diddly squat if a loved one comes to grief.

So she binned your shit. Nek Minnit! She owed you something for sure.

I agree with what has been said here, sometimes family or friends are not the best to teach close ones to ride/drive. However if you have the general understanding that he/she will listen to you and put aside all relationships, I dont see why that could not be a benificial lesson (Or why the said person will not shut the fuck up and listen)

As Stoneville said, maybe go back through an instructor to get her mindset an confidence back. After all this is a matter of life and death.

I've been teaching my partner on her 250 for a while now. The learning has been going at her pace, and she's also taking lessons with an instructor. She's doing fine, and despite us both being feisty when we want to, we've treated it as a shared project, with no tantrums allowed. It may sound soft to some people, but if you want to have your bike habits supported at home it can make a big difference if the hobby/passion for bikes is shared. She's pretty much licence-ready now.
It can be done if you both have the right attitude
