Or crash your street bike, buy it back and then do it up the way you want with the left over money. While I didnt crash my bike on purpose, it turned out to be the best thing I did as after buying it back I had an extra $6,500 left over for custom springs, brembo gear etc.

Do you want to actually go racing, or do you want to do track days without the little voice in your head saying don't drop your street bike? How much do you want to spend??

Oh - yup, good pointers, I should have been more specific.

I want to do occasional track days without spanking my commuter to death. (I like it too much, plus my commuter is not real track bike material IMHO).

I want to have it in my garage with as little outlay as possible, suppose anything up to 6K.

I want to be able to fit tyres, fill with fuel, check the oil / coolant, trailer it to Wanneroo, thrash it to death for one afternoon every 6-8 weeks or so, take it home and put it away until next time.
not panic about getting in to work the next day or that i lowsided it and the wing mirror, top fairing, headlight, rear fairing, rear indicator passenger foot peg etc... will cost 3K to repair.

Having done a lot of competition work, (cars NOT bikes !) I understand buying a "fully sorted" "all the right bits" set up kit is the way to go.
If you know what you want. BUT the down side of that is you are buying others set ups and thrashed kit, if you're not careful or specific about what you want.

I don't know what I want, which rules out a full bore race bike yet, (unless there is something that catches my eye)
I just couldn't ride it safely, I am not a racer (yet).
I have ridden on the street many a sports bike.
BUT on the track even a simple stock cbr600 will impress / scare the balls of you if ridden well.
SO I have to learn to ride well first.

therefore a stock road sports bike that has cosmetic damage and is no longer to be used on the road, is the cheapest way of getting this (I believe) for now.
when i have "mastered" (I can hear myself and yes I know!) it will be time to change, but got to start somewhere.

strip the useless crap off, get the miles under the belt, and then see if its what i like.
I like the idea of stock (for now) just while i learn, to keep it cheap and sweet.

BTW- the track day yesterday I saw more than 20 bikes crash into or off from the track.
run offs, low sides, highsides, and simple operator error!
most of those were street bikes that now will be worth fek all due to the flashy plastics.
I dont need the flashy plastics.
I'd want to start with one of those, not with a mint one like mine and wreck it.

thanks for the links too, its all good information, keep it up...

SO that said, what has anyone got to offer?

Considering the price of e-bay fairings these days, I doubt you're going to find anything that only has cosmetic damage.

For 4-6k I would be contacting John from JB performance bikes and seeing what he has coming up.

    Or look here: BuySwapSell

    There is a
    2004 R6 going for $6500
    VTR1000 for $5500
    05 R6 for $6500
    03 R6 for $4900
    04 CBR 1000 $5900
    04 ZX10R for $5500

A lot of these bikes also come with stands and spares etc...

Or, if you wanted to get into racing try out Supermoto.

As Goofy said, quite a few worth checking out on mcrcwa

    Race Bike:
2004 Yamaha R1. Power Commander, full Micron, Velocity stacks, Ohlins suspension and steering damper, 2 spare sets of fairings(1 brand new in box and unpainted), front and rear stands and warmers. Bike setup and ready for track or race. $6,500. (w/e 02/12/2011)
Gutsy question. You're a shark. Sharks are winners, and they don't look back because they have no necks. Necks are for sheep.

The set up you get on a race bike isn't just adjustments. It is stuff like rearsets to give peg clearance, steering dampers, gearing changes, valving etc.

You will find a set up track or race bike far better to ride at pace.

Even though they are ridden hard, race bikes tend to be very well serviced and maintained. There are plenty of race bikes around that still have tight strong engines after many laps.

The road bike conversion path sees many packages and ebay purchases arriving at you front door.

all good advice, yes, I understand.
however, not meaning to be rude, and at the risk of repeating my advert which is in the WANTED / FOR SALE section and not in the discussion forum...
Wanted - cheap sport road bike (possible with damage) REGO not important - to run at track-days). what have you got?

thanks for the advice, and all the PM'd offers, all gratefully received lots to think about... thanks guys (and Gals!)

by all means, report the post if you feel its needed, get it deleted, what ever you do doesnt bother me... but i set up a race bike from a road bike.... its alot more than you think. and that was to a VERY minimal spec race bike, only as much as a track day bike would need... it already had a muffler, and i left standard pegs, suspension etc. only changed bars and fairings. and swing arm pick ups... and chain guard... and sprockets.... and new brake pads... and lockwiring everything... the list just goes on.

a race bike at $6k, will be in far better conndition than a road bike at $6k. simple reason? you pay for the rego on an old bike, that or its a later model, and needs major repair.

    but as you said.......
for a damaged bike you can prep yourself(and thats the only reasonn i can think to go that avenue) JB has a good selection of bikes, and it appears can help you get them repaired if you want to buy a damged bike and go that path.

post up what you end up with
    season 2012 is coming.....

JB performance bikes, he sells wrecks delivered straight to your door, and I believe he can sort out race glass for you. Also, he is a forum sponsor.
