Honda MT250's in an original running state are really hard to find now. This one is not what id call 'pretty' as it was left outside for a while by a previous owner but it is only surface cosmetics as you can see in the pics. From what i can tell all the rare and hard to find parts are all there and it starts and runs better than it looks (LOL!). Cleaning and cosmetic restoration would sort its looks and then use it as it is and enjoy it, or bite the bullet and fully restore it, your call. Either way it's a fun and very solid bit of kit, and a lot of bike for the money.
I bought it as a runner from a friend of mine locally and was going to restore it but I have another of these which I am still in the process of doing a full rebuild on, so ive just not had the time so I may as well let someone else have a go with it.
The bike has OEM Honda keys for the ignition and the seat locks. It starts and runs well even on old fuel i got it with, it smokes a bit so I reckon someone has put some extra 2stroke in the fuel as the oil pump works fine now that ive cleaned it up a bit (you can now see it working as Honda fitted clear lines to these from new). These bikes can be registered even though they have no compliance plate as I am told these were pre ADR compliance plates for bikes. This model sold from 1974 to 1976 and is based on the 73/74 CR250 and a lot of parts are common. In fact Honda still carries a lot of parts for these bikes in stock as so much of the Honda range was common to many models back in those days and this means parts are still available long after more modern models parts have dried up.
Since I got it I have bought a key for the ignition, changed the oil, fixed the slipping kickstart with good used parts from my spares, cleaned the carb out, fitted a new airfilter and a good quality MX chain and it starts and runs really well, even the 2 stroke oil pump is working well. Its a bit grabby with the brakes and could do with some more general cleaning up and fettling if you wanted to use it daily with things like it will need a new battery and some cleaning of the wiring connections, and I should say that it has a slow puncture in the rearwheel and the tyres are a bit old and cracked. But all that said, I have ridden it off road as it stands and its great fun. A new set of tyres and a few hours of clean up and youd have a fun woods bike.
It has some very hard to find parts on it, not least it sports a really good seat... If I had a $1 for every time someone asked me recently if I had a spare seat for an MT, I would be a rich man. Clocks are nice and the tank whilst its lightly dented on the top (which i am sure would pop out) a repaint would see it like new, these are solid tanks and do not tend to rot out like more modern units. The bike is very original and would make a solid base for a restoration and is a lot more complete than the junk ive seen on ebay the past few years, plus this one starts and runs well, has keys and hard to find parts.
I am looking for close on $1250 for this bike as its stands, and I do have some spares I can sell on top as well since I have spare engines, carbs and other parts if the buyer wants since ive gathered a lot of stuff for these over the years. Bike is located in Sydney, and i will happily help get it ready for pickup by a shipping company if an interstate buyer from the forum wanted it.
Drop me a PM and come and buy yourself some cheap fun!![]()
