Road, race, both? Capacity? Long or short service intervals?
Road, prefer above 400/500cc not fuss regarding services intervals
If I had the cash on me right now I'd be grabbing this in a flash...

Me thinks he would take 8k for it...

If you dont plan on doing trackdays on it this would be awesome (not sure if its sold or not though):
Husqvarna SM610 - Bunbury

SM630's are only ~12k new

hypermotard is a naked, not a motard.
Steves in midland and Tyres for bikes.
Save the extra few grand and buy an SXV, don't fuck around.

I rode one for the first time on the weekend, amazing bike ( i now understand what people are talking about when they say the vdb sxv's are too much). Although id still go a 610/630/690 over it just for the fact i dont have to rebuild it every 10,000 km's.
You really need to work out what type of riding you want to do before you get a motard. I did ~8,000 km's on my road tard in 6 months, thats why a sxv wouldnt work for me.

Buy a DRZ400 and bling the fuck out of it then.
Or XR600

obviously not the most impressive of the tards but enough to keep you entertained and in and out of trouble on a commute.
edit: the drz400e is the suzuki enduro model, there were also the S dual sport and the SM supermoto but the E is lighter and different carb etc so has more punch, there are a lot less being converted since the SM came out but still enough around, definitely around your $5k budget for one in good condition but a few years old.
Do you remember the good old days before the internet?
when arguments were only entered into by the physically or intellectually able.

Yeh, the sm version has a smaller carb and detuned cams so it has noticeably less performance. It does have nicer suspension though.
Personally I'd rather convert an e model then buy a sm model.
